The wastelands, inhospitable as they were, wasn't the best of options for a quiet day out for most people. Most people, however, weren't Job. It hadn't been too long since he had ventured to this...strange city from his homeland, and, surprisingly, this was one of the few places where he felt at home. This desolate land reminded him much of 'The Shattered Shield', a war torn, broken stretch of land where he had fought for most of his adult life. A place which had been the cause of most of his sorrows, and yet, he couldn't help but feel almost nostalgic for the land, and the people in it, terrible though they had been. Here, in this foreign city, he felt as if he didn't belong. Everything here was so...different. In some things, they seemed to have advanced far beyond anything his people had accomplished, and yet in others, they seemed almost pitifully behind. Perhaps the most stinging part, though, was that here, he couldn't help but feel useless. Sure, back home he had been used, abused, and betrayed, but at least he could help people. He had the knowledge and the power to protect lives, and keep danger away from those he held dear. Around here, though, there was no such luck. He was one out of many who had some sort of supernatural ability, his skills as a surgeon didn't seem to be worth much, seeing as how widespread medical assistance was, and there were too many people to have even a hope of protecting anyone.
As it was, he only felt truly at peace here, in the place that reminded him most of his sorrows. He couldn't help but smirk at the sense of irony it all gave him. Still, that wasn't why he came out here. No, he came out here to do what he always did when he felt weak and helpless as he did now. He had come out here to train.
An onlooker who didn't know what was going on might have thought that Job had decided to dance with a staff. In a way, that is what he had chosen to do as he began his spear exercises. He seemed to move effortlessly from defensive moves to low sweeps and high jabs, and back again, never once stopping the movement of the weapon. as he moved, a string of light appeared from thin air, and began twirling around him, almost as if dancing along with him. When he finally stopped, the string of light vanished to all but his eyes, where it transformed into a girl less than a foot in height, who hovered right in front of his eyes. "That was great, Joe, but why did we come out here, and not to someplace a little less...you know, hot?" the girl asked. Whether or not she, a creature made from light, could even be affected by the heat, Job had no idea. When he had first met her, she had been nothing more than that string, floating mindlessly around him, and sticking all of his things to him, or the ground, or just about anywhere else that could be a hassle when he really needed to get going, and couldn't grab one of his things. She had advanced from that, obviously, though it seemed to be a gradual process. From learning to speak, to learning to reason, to learning to feel, and so on. It wasn't too unlikely that she would be able to feel heat next.
"It's quieter here, Syl, and I'd rather not make a scene when I start really getting into it." he smirked as he got ready for the next phase of his training. Without another word, he suddenly shot into the air. It wasn't quite like taking flight. Rather, he seemed to have fallen towards the sky, feet pointed directly towards the endless expanse of blue. Then, as quickly as he had shot upwards, he started 'falling' towards the city, and then towards the mountains. After a few more sudden shifts in direction, he started falling down back towards the earth again, though he certainly didn't seem to be falling quickly. As soon as his feet touched the ground, he bolted back into the sky again, this time practicing spear forms as he bolted this way and that. As he trained, Syl once more became a string of light, visible for all to see.

It had been a few weeks since her encounter two magic users, the young metahuman had laid low for all that time though now Neila had grown restless and wanted to test out if she could really fly. That was about the only good thing that came out of the encounter with those two. And the best place for that? Well the wastelands! No one ever went there because of the intense heat, and well for Neila the hotter the better it would give her a fire boost. So the young metahuman made her way to the barren wastelands and walked pretty far in, the heat not effecting her one bit. She wanted to be as far from the city as she could not wanting anyone to see her. Once the city was no longer in view Neila nodded. "Ok that is far enough... No one in their right minds would come out this far." Neila said to herself. She then went full body flame. " Alight time to see if that was just a fluke or not.." Neila said as she then gave herself a running start, when she was running as fast as she could she then jumped pushing as far from the ground as she could and to her surprise she did start to fly! "Whoa! It does work!" Neila said as she then struggled to stay in the air and slowly came down back to the ground. The flame around her body disappearing.
Neila smiled, "Awesome! Now I just need to master this flying thing." Neila said as she once again went full body flame though this did she did not take off in a run. She wanted to lift up in the air without having to run and jump. And sure enough as she concentrated she started to rise into the air. Neila smiled once again as she went up, though this time something caught her eye. She saw someone else in the area, though she was to far away to make out any details of this person, all she saw was someone with what looked like a long stick looking thing, and something glowing and flying up and down. Neila Blinked as she then stopped rising into the air. "Great there is someone else out here.... Well hopefully if I leave them alone they wont bother me." Neila said as she then tried to stay in the air as long as she could before slowly coming back down. As soon as her feet touched the ground Neila then took off in a run once more and jumped this time instead of trying to fly straight up she wanted to see how far she could fly. So she pushed herself high into the air and started to fly straight forward not really caring if that other person saw her, and there was a high chance that would happen seeing as she now most likely looked like a giant fireball from far away.

"Hey, Joe?"
"What is it, Syl?"
"You, uh...you know there's someone else here, right?"
Job stopped his training, and floated in midair. "Yeah? What about it, Syl?" he asked. With his keen eyes, and the advantage that being to high up gave his sight, he had had no trouble noticing Neila as soon as she began her...show. Probably also training. What a nuisance. Job had wanted to be alone. Well, alone except for Syl, of course.
"Well, I was just wondering if maybe you should talk to them. They also has powers, so maybe..." Syl had changed back into her humanoid form, and it certainly seemed as if she was interested in the newcomer.
Job, however, was anything but. "You want me to form a team with someone I don't even know? Syl, that's ridiculous. For one thing, you don't even know where their loyalties lie, and for another thing, I don't need help to do what I have to do." He countered. Though his words seemed harsh, there was no malice behind any of it. It seemed more like a father telling a daughter why her plans wouldn't work out.
"Yeah, but...maybe you could talk to them! See what they're like! Besides, you've always done better when you've had a squad, you know? It would make sense to start forming a team to help out the city, right?"
"I..." Job sighed heavily. He knew full well as soon as Syl got an idea in her head, she wouldn't be deterred so easily. "I'll tell you what. I'm going down there, and if they feels like talking, they will, and if they don't, I'm not going to force them. Does that work for you Syl?" he asked. Syl, knowing that, unless this fire spinner had someone bugging them in the same way she was bugging Job, they probably wouldn't start up conversation anyway, hesitantly agreed, and Job began to gently fall to the earth once more. True to his word, he stood there, right in the open, watching this ball of fire.

Neila flew pretty far before coming back down to the ground, she smiled placing her hand on her hips. " Yeah I can do this.. Just need to practice a bit is all." Neila said to herself. She then jumped up once again she needed to master staying up in the air that meant seeing how much flame was needed for that. She had to find the right mix though.. She needed just enough to keep her in the air without completely draining her energy. Neila then started to hover high in the air as she started adjusting her flames. As she did this though she noticed the other person she had seen was now on the ground and looking up at her. "Tch, great.." Neila mumbled. She knew what that meant the other guy wanted to talk... Ugh may as well get it over with so she could go back to training. Neila slowly came back down and when her feet touched the ground her flames vanished. Neila then looked over at man looking at her. "Ummm... What?...." Neila asked as she crossed her arms and then waited for a answer.

Job didn't say anything for some time. Instead, he looked Neila up and down, like a drill sergeant inspecting a new, rather unruly, recruit. "Your form's sloppy" he said simply, after some time
"Job..." Syl began, invisible and inaudible once more to anyone but her partner.
"Yes, Syl?" Job asked the empty air beside him.
"You told me that you would talk to her."
"I did no such thing. I said that it was all up to her. If she doesn't, I will not." He seemed to have no concern about looking strange as he spoke to someone who didn't seem to be there, though why would he care what a stranger thought anyway? What was she going to do? Tell everyone she had seen someone talk to themselves? A real riveting story that would make. Nevertheless, he turned his attention back towards the flesh and blood person in front of him. "Like I was saying. Sloppy form. You'll end up breaking your neck if you fly too high before you figure out the basics, pup." he stated condescendingly, eliciting another warning 'Job...' from Syl.

Neila raised a eyebrow when the first thing the stranger said her form was sloppy, though she remind silent as he then seemingly started talking to himself. So ether this guy was bats crazy or there was someone there she could not see. Odd stuff always happened in Aster City... Neila just stared at the stranger as he then again pointed out how sloppy she was and that she could break her neck. Neila gave a smirk as she then slowly clapped. " Yes, why thank you captain obvious! Of course my flying is not the best! I just found out I could fly a few weeks ago and this is my first time to be able to practice! " Neila said as she then stopped clapping and let her arms hang down at her side. " Sooo tell me.. Are you bats crazy and talking to yourself? Or do ya have a invisible buddy?" Neila asked rather bluntly. May as well get to the bottom of his guy seemingly talking to himself. " Its fine if you are crazy.. I have met lots of people who talk to themselves. " Neila said with a shrug. Yeah plenty of people who live on the streets talk to themselves so it was a normal thing for Neila to see. "Though if there is someone there.. Hello Syl?" Neila said in a questioning tone still unsure if there was really someone there or not.

"Don't respond, Syl." Job told his companion under his breath. A request that was obeyed, for now. "I don't reckon it matters much whether or not I'm crazy. My point still stands, and it's not 'Oh you're unskilled' as you seem to believe it is. Listen when others are speaking, kiddo. 'You'll end up breaking your neck if you fly too high before you figure out the basics'. Ring a bell? But there is another concern. If you haven't been at this for long, I'll take it you don't know the extent of your power, eh? Well, being this reckless then is almost a death sentence, since you never know when you could...burn out." Job afforded himself a little smile at that one.
"Good one, Joe." Syl commented, though whether or not she was sarcastic, if she was even properly aware of sarcasm yet, was unknown.
"Thank you, Syl. I try." he replied, giving a short, somewhat smug bow to the invisible girl.

Heh this guy sure liked to repeat himself. And the way he spoke to his invisible buddy made Neila think there was something really there. As this guy did not have the same mannerisms as the crazies did. "Oi get the cotton balls out of your ears dude. I said I'm practicing.. There for I know the risks of flying there for working at making sure I know how to properly adjust my flames. I may just be a street kid but I know better then to over push my limits... I have had these powers since I was 13 years old. I have pretty much mastered my powers till I found out I could fly a few weeks ago.. So please don't lecture me about being reckless, I know how far I can push myself. " Neila said as she as she crossed her arms once more. Not being intimidated one bit. Though she was showing signs of getting annoyed. Just who did this guy think he was anyway? " Now if you excuse me I have more practicing to do. " Neila said as she then turned away from Job and started to walk away. Neila had been self training herself for years, she did not need some random stranger trying to act like some sort of couch.
She then once again she went full body flame, Neila then took off in a run and jumped into the air flying up a a bit and then just started to hover in the air. She needed to work at staying in the air as long as she could it was the only way she would be able to get the right amount of flames to be able to stay air born. As she hovered in the air she kept a eye on Joe though. Not really trusting him at all at the moment. Though a idea came to her, "Also Syl, don't let that guy boss ya around if you wanna talk then talk. I think I may have seen you already if it was you who was the glowly thing flying around with him." Neila said to see if she could get some sort of response from this Syl.

"Not even a reaction from my pun, eh? Guess there's no accounting for people's tastes." Job said smugly as he seemed to brush off her rebuttal. "So? Did I fulfil my end of the promise, or do you want me to continue this farce with this kid?"
Syl, who had not revealed herself to Neila--her inherent unwillingness to appear in this form around strangers overcoming her somewhat gullible nature--, seemed rather torn. "Well, she doesn't seem to be very nice...but you weren't being polite either! So there's no telling how she actually is! Joe, you gotta be nicer! You can't be so sour all the time!"
"Come now. After what I've been through, I can afford to be a little sour now and then. You've seen what playing nice has gotten me."
"Well...yes. BUT! BUT BUT BUT! Being nice also was what drew me to you! And you can't deny that I am the best thing that's ever happened to you! So there!"
"You just don't know when to quit, do you? Hey! Kiddo! Just so ya know, that 'glowy thing' ya saw? Wasn't nothin'. just light bein' pulled and used to fuel myself." Job said, though Syl seemed even less happy at the lie. She would have to deal with that, Job decided. If she didn't show herself willingly, he would have to figure out how best to keep her a secret. At least until she felt she knew the other person enough.

"Pfft you know how many fire puns I have heard? A lot..." Neila said when the stranger made a comment of her not saying anything about his pun. She then slowly came back down taking note that once again he spoke to his invisible buddy. Ok, there had to be someone there.. It seemed this Syl was the one who had asked him to speak to her for whatever reason. When Neila landed she stared at Job as he spoke to his invisible buddy. Then he tried to play off the light she had seen, that made Neila chuckle a bit. "Ya know? I think that was Syl. And this Syl is the only reason you spoke to me. So how about you both stop beating around the bush and tell what you want. " Neila said calling them both out based on Job unwillingness to talk though something was clearly making him, and the fact he kept talking to himself. For now this was amusing for Neila it was fun calling people out when they lied thinking she was just some dumb kid.. Ha~ after living so long on the streets you learn a thing or two after a dealing with possible dangerous people. The streets was not a very safe place to grow up after all.

"As I said, no accounting for taste. You may have heard plenty, but my puns are the type to set the world on fire." Job said, once more seeming proud of himself for a brief moment. Then he seemed to shift back into seriousness. "As it is though, kid, I was here exactly for what this was. Nothing more. I fulfilled my duty. So, feel free to fly along now, little guy." he said, giving a short, curt "I fulfilled my end of the deal, Syl. She doesn't want to chat, I'm not gonna force it." to his companion, despite her protests.
"I'll tell you this, though," he said as he began to rise into the air as well, "Again, I will tell you, and chances are you won't listen. again. Flying so high when you're practicing for the first time will get you killed, and I don't feel like watching someone die...again." there was a touch of sadness in his voice at that, hinting to his past failures to protect people. Syl, at that moment, spoke briefly to the girl, though she remained hidden. "Please stay safe, lady. Joe would be sad if you hurt yourself." As it was, she seemed to be quite fine with speaking to Neila, seeing as how Job didn't want to. As she turned to follow him once again, for a brief moment, she was visible to all. Whether this was intentional or not was hard to say, but regardless, the secret that Job had been trying to hide from this brash girl was revealed, not that he was aware of it.

Neila winced at the set the world on fire pun. "Gonna set you on fire if you don't stop.."" Neila thought to herself. Neila then waited as Job spoke to this Syl and started to give the lecture about flying to high again. Then with a huff he started to walk away but then Neila heard a new voice, asking her to stay safe and that Job would be sad if she got heart. Neila did not know how to feel having a strange voice in her head, then even briefly showed herself. It confirmed Syl was there. Neila then smiled, ok so this was interesting.. "Ya know... If you where offering to teach me you could have just said so... I would not mind for someone to show me how." Neila said as it clicked for her what Job was possibly trying to do. She had been put off from the random lecture from a stranger to really notice. But also she wanted to see if she could get Syl to talk more, best way to do that was to keep Job around.

Neila's statement seemed to confuse Job for a short while. It didn't take long, though, for his perplexed face to show signs of understanding, and a touch of annoyance. "What did you tell her, Syl?" he asked, somewhat irritable. It was clear to him that, in the time that he wasn't paying attention, his little companion must have made a few claims that he would have to follow up on.
"I didn't say nothing but the truth! But hey! Now that she seems to be nicer, you should take her up on her offer! Like you said, she could hurt herself, left to her own devices!" Syl countered, seeming more smug than anything.
"...Gah! Okay, Syl. Okay, kid. I'll help you out, so long as you stop smoldering. That's another one for ya." he said as he descended back to the ground. Just what was he getting himself into? He didn't know anything about this kid's powers. He hadn't even perfected his own yet. He was stuck with this, however, so it looked like he was going to have to learn pretty quickly how to teach. "Right then. Let's see your form. Hover for me real quick. Hover, mind you. No more than a few feet." he instructed, hoping that something would click as he watched her practice more intently. Perhaps seeing her form would help him figure out how to improve it.

If this was a anime a angry mark would be appearing on Neila's head when Job once again did a fire pun. She did not know how much longer she could put up with that... But for she was going to. Neila then nodded when he asked to see her form and only just hover. Flames ignited all over Neila's body once more, the flames then got bigger as she then started to lift of the ground a few inches, she stayed like that for a few minutes before landing on the ground. The flames on her body died out leaving no burn marks on her body or clothes. " How was that?" Neila asked as she looked at Job and then waited for the answer. Doing something like this was odd for Neila. All her life she had been self taught and trained with her powers. And now she was willing to have someone give her a few tips on flying. She was mostly just doing this because of Syl though. She wanted to know what Syl was, she looked like she could be a fairy but she could easily be something else to.

"Good, you did good. A good part of my doubts about helping you have gone up in flames." Job paused for a short while. As it was, he had no idea how he was going to train this woman. He was used to training people in things that he knew, like the spear. This woman didn't share his powers. Could he properly teach her to fly efficiently and safely? Well, there was only one way to find out.
"Alright, so let's move on. I want you to do the same thing, only hover a little bit higher, and I want you to pulse your power, see if you can keep yourself in the air without those flames pouring out of you the whole time. I'm looking for longevity here." he requested. He hoped that, by learning the extent of what she could do, he might be able to develop some sort of training regimen. Jeez, did he really have to do this? Well, Syl wanted it, so he supposed he did have to, but that didn't make it any easier to accept. Focusing his attention back to the matter at hand, he observed the girl, keeping a mental note of how long she managed to do what he asked.
