Relationship: Matheus hasn't seen his father Zelwyn after his betrayal, and is uncertain about confronting him again. In contrast, he is very close to and protective of his daughter Celia, though he may have sheltered her too much.
Personality:
Matheus is a pensive, stern man with a strong drive to combat the evils of the world. While his actions might be noble, his intentions are more cynical due to his own harrowing experiences. This has made him wary and cautious of others. He'll still partake in conversation and pleasantries, but his trust is difficult to earn. In spite of this, he dislikes being alone, specifically with his own thoughts; he will often try to keep himself occupied so his mind doesn't wander. He's a little more relaxed and amiable around close friends and comrades, and much softer when with his daughter.
The earlier events in his life have also led Matheus to prefer routine. He isn't much of a fan of change and is often reluctant or resistant to it, especially if it involves personal stances or beliefs. He can get rather passionate when challenged or dragged from his comfort zone, and his normally stoic demeanor can give way to passionate fury.
Powers:
Militant Combat Training
Matheus has served as a knight since his early adulthood. Though past his prime, he is experienced in combat and has traded in his physical reflexes for more tactical maneuvers. He can move swiftly in chainmail or plate armor and is capable of carrying heavy loads on top of this over long distances. He is most adept at fighting with dual hand axes.
Weapon: Sincleavers (Dual Axes)
A personal pair of hand axes that Matthias uses for combat and utility. It was crafted with metal materials naturally resistant to magical effects. This resistance ranges from offensive elemental spells to secondary utility spells like levitation or teleportation; this is mostly so his weapons are less likely to be broken or stolen by magic. This resistance also means his axes haven't been enchanted, as the material makes it difficult to hold the enchantment. (It can be temporarily enchanted however, but it's usually difficult to do so.) The Sincleavers can also ignore a target's weaker magical properties to deal consistent (low) damage, even if the only damage he can do is a mere scratch.
Magic Resistant Armor
Matheus' armor is made from the same magic resistant material used in his dual axes. It is not enchanted and simply reduces damage from magic attacks. Otherwise, it is standard armor that protects him from physical blows.
Weaknesses:
Though a militant knight all too familiar with combat, he's still human - and past his prime at that. He's also a bit weaker in one leg, having a limp in it for a while before it lessened enough for him to fight again. His axes are also difficult to use for non lethal situations, forcing him to fight either barehanded or with a temporary makeshift weapon.
History:
Like his father Zelwyn Reinhart, Matheus served the Templars as soon as he reached adulthood. He didn't need their teachings to convince him to join their knightly order; he'd seen the horrors of strange magics first hand. His own home, Irongarde, was constantly assaulted by hostile forces. Whether it be dark cultists, demonic warlocks, strange beasts or cursed creatures of undead, their onslaught was relentless. The Templars were always there to fight off these evils, but they unfortunately could not hold off these groups forever.
When these groups united and struck his town at full force, the Templar forces were quickly overrun. Matheus fought alongside whatever troops he could in a last ditch effort to hold the front lines while surviving civilians escaped. He then faced his own father Zelwyn in combat, who appeared on the enemy side and revealed he was responsible for orchestrating the assault. He claimed he had grown tired of the constant attacks and hoped to end it by any means necessary. However, whether he had actually felt this way or was corrupted by dark magics, Matheus had no way of knowing. He tried to kill his father for his betrayal, only to learn that death was no longer permanent for Zelwyn. In the end, Matheus couldn't win and was forced to retreat as his hometown of Irongarde fell to the enemy.
Angry and hurt that his father succumbed to the magical forces they fought against all of their lives, Matheus was traumatized by the experience. If his once stalwart, dutiful father could be so easily corrupted, then Matheus resolved he would not be the same. He became quiet, terse, and unflinchingly focused, only unleashing his burning fury in battle against his magical foes. He became brutal but quick and efficient. Combat became mere routine, and his only goal was to take down as many magical foes as possible.
He never expected that he would adopt a child.
During the defense of another town, Matheus protected a young girl from a collapsing, burning house. He had shielded her with his body, and the girl only suffered a few minor injuries. Matheus, on the other hand, found that his leg didn't fully recover, forcing him into an early retirement as a knight. He was bitter about losing his only purpose and sought ways to cope with his hampered movement, but he could never fight quite the same.
The girl however was adopted into the Templars, and Matheus learned from the caretakers that she'd constantly been asking about him. Learning that her name was Celia, he began to pay her visits and check up on her well being. Matheus would slowly get to know the girl and spend more time with her. As he did so, his bad leg seemed to regain its old strength... and he was able to resume his life as a knight once more. Matheus attributed it to finding a glimmer of true happiness again, and soon enough he'd officially adopted young Celia as his own daughter.
Many years later, now an older and wiser man, Matheus's experience as a seasoned knight led to his relocation to the new Templar base. He was resistant to the change and wary of the nearby Aster City, but he ultimately followed his orders. He worried especially for Celia, fearing the new and unknown threats in the surrounding area.
Recently, Matheus has grown increasingly concerned for his daughter. He's pieced together that she's been able to use healing magic for quite some time, suspecting that it was the true reason of how his bad leg recovered. However, he avoids the subject out of fear of the other Templars finding out and subjecting Celia to similar treatment of their mages. Because of that, he keeps a very close eye on Celia, though most simply view him as an overprotective father keeping potential suitors away from her.
Anything else:
- Matheus came from a minor noble family, though it was disgraced when his father betrayed Irongarde.
- Celia did in fact heal his bad leg with magic, but she didn't know it at the time. (She was small and mostly just gave it a lot of hugs lol)
- He strongly disagrees with the attack on the school for being poorly thought out and foolishly endangering kids with an all-or-nothing approach. He believed it counterintuitive to protecting human children.
- He often mentors another younger Templar, Cyril, who looks up to him. He dislikes Cyril's partner, Vance, for making eyes at Celia.
- His hometown backstory was inspired by Warcraft lore, where a demonic plague overran an entire kingdom and turned a sizable chunk of the human population into undead.
