Name: Cyril Gallant
Gender: Male
Age: 22
Race: Human
Home: Wastelands Templar Base; originally Dustrgrove
Alliance: The Templars
Alignment: Lawful Good
Family: N/A
Friends: Vance Devlin, Andriel Wynford, Celia Reinhart, Matheus Reinhart
Likes: Honor, swordplay, cherry pie
Dislikes: Dragons, undead
Job: Knight-Corporal with the Templars
Relationships:
Cyril mostly disagrees with some of Vance's behavioral habits, but otherwise the two work surprisingly well together. He respects Cedric (especially his work ethic) though Cyril finds his arrogance a little grating. He believes Cedric could learn a little humility, and privately speculates it may be why he hasn't risen in rank. Cyril also respects Matheus and Andriel as superiors and model knights, while he believes Ferris, Demarcus and Krea could learn a little more discipline.
Personality:
Cyril is an idealistic young man who strives to uphold the values of justice and honor. He hopes to one day be a model knight, and often tries to follow a personal code of honor as best he can. It's no secret that this can make him a nitpicky and a stickler for the rules, and he hasn't quite yet realized that upholding them doesn't always guarantee being morally right. He actually possesses a surprisingly natural aptitude for combat, with the only thing holding him back being his strict adherence to specific rules. However, when push comes to shove, Cyril doesn't hesitate to break these rules in a serious battle - especially if fighting against magic.
Powers:
Though a normal human, Cyril was physically trained for combat by the Templars, so he can hold his own in an evenly matched fight. He's able to move swiftly in his armor and excels in sword melee like most other Templars. He tries to maintain a basic training regime to keep himself in shape. His fighting style also varies between two modes: slow and defensive, relying on his shield in order to read his opponents or protect an ally, or very fast paced and surprisingly aggressive to try and end fights quickly.
Weapon: Ardorelux (Burning Light)
Cyril's sword, which is infused with light magic. It normally serves well against dark or unholy foes, like dark mages, necromancers, or undead.
Illumination: The blade itself can light up and illuminate areas. It can be safely touched while glowing.
Firelight: Cyril can command the blade to heat up, making it dangerous to touch when glowing very brightly.
Illusion Dispel: Causing the blade to glow can enable him to dispel some magical illusions, though he has to actively focus to make the dispel work.
Flash Heal: The glowing can also mark the beginning of casting a healing spell, but he must also focus to do this.
Light Beam: The glowing energy can also be channeled into a light beam attack, but it can be deflected off of shiny, reflective surfaces.
He cannot move when using healing or dispelling effects, or else it interrupts his focus and he must start it over.
Equipment: Enchanted Metal Buckler
Cyril's shield that he uses in conjunction with his sword. Alongside its normal purpose to block strikes, it is enchanted to withstand and slightly redirect various elemental or magical attacks.
Weaknesses:
Though armed to fight and protect himself, he's still a normal human. Since he specializes against magical beings in particular, he doesn't fare well against modern or conventional means of fighting. He can't swim while armored either and risks drowning if thrown into deep water.
History:
Cyril was born in the village of Dustgrove, a once desolate patch of land. Originally settled by desperate farmers, their hard work transformed the terrain into a fertile paradise for crops. As the second son in his family, Cyril grew up helping them tend to the fields, but he dreamed of one day doing something grander. He idolized storybook heroes as a child and aspired to one day become like them. Unfortunately, His older brother would often stomp out Cyril's dreams with cold reality checks, causing many arguments between the pair. His brother reasoned that the heroes were made up because they never came around to help Dustgrove when it needed it; it was up to them, common folk, to do things themselves. Of course, Cyril argued this is why he would become a hero himself - so that he could help when Dustgrove needed it most.
That's why the Templars left such a big impression on him.
When a chromatic red dragon began to terrorize Dustgrove, Cyril felt powerless. Not that he could've done anything; the village was simply forced to bend to the dragon's will, lest it scorch their food, their homes, or worst of all - them. Even if they did cater to his every whim, dragons were fickle creatures, and there were times the monster spewed out his destructive flames for his own amusement. It angered Cyril to no end.
Thankfully, the dragon's terror attracted the Templars. With their own means of countermagic and enchanted weaponry, the knights were able to strip the dragon of most of his power, reverting him into a much weaker human form. The farmers of Dustgrove called for his execution, and it was a request the Templars were much more than happy to oblige. It was planned for the next day, made to be a spectacle for the village.
Instead, the dragon man broke free in the middle of the night, rampaging in vain as he sought out his lost power. He was unaccustomed to his new form however, and was quickly overwhelmed by the Templars, forcing him to flee. Dustgrove ended up robbed of its rightful comeuppance, but in the end, they were glad to be rid of the dragon once and for all.
Not Cyril, though. He was angry at the suffering the dragon had caused them, and he could only imagine how many more other creatures could be terrorizing small settlements like Dustgrove. He saw the Templars as his only chance at finding the man again, joining them at the first chance he got. And if he never found that dragon, well... He would still have the opportunity to help others and do good in a grand way, just like he'd always dreamed.
It was culture shock to say the least, but Cyril worked hard and studied hard. He dreamt of being a knight of honor... which was why he was so taken aback when he was partnered up with Vance Devlin. To Cyril, all he saw was a rude, womanizing thief who tried to pawn his work off on others. He was the sort of person Cyril couldn't believe would be accepted in the Templars. The disdain was mutual on Vance's end, and the two had a rocky start. In the end however, they learned to understand each other and have since become close friends... though most wouldn't guess this from how often Cyril lectures Vance.
Cyril is currently stationed at the Templar base near Aster City. When he learned they were setting up the base because of a dragon sighting, he eagerly requested to be stationed there, believing it could potentially be the red dragon that terrorized his home...
Anything else:
- His weapon's name is in Latin.
- His personal creed, shared with Vance, is "Light after darkness." For Cyril, he personally views it as "so long as you hope, things will turn out alright in the end."
- Though his most personal experience with a creature is a dragon, he's pretty afraid of the undead, which is why his equipment is more geared towards countering them.
