((Another one of Izzack's characters, I just wrote up the profile))
Name: James King
Alias: Torment
Gender: Male
Age: 25
Race: Human
Home: Aster City
Alliance: Lyle Truman
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Family: Demarcus "X-Caliber" King
Friends: None
Allies: Lyle Truman, Tobasco Fieri
Enemies: Demarcus "X-Caliber" King
Likes: Solitude
Dislikes: His allies
Job: Hired Villain (by Lyle Truman)
Appearance:
Torment is a tall, dark male with a constant expression of disdain crossed with apathy. His hair is black and pulled back into tight cornrows. He's normally seen in his "work" clothes, which are tailored to be intimidating and concealing. He wears a hooded, sleeveless leather coat. Metal studs and spikes adorn his outfit. He wears metal chains wrapped around each wrist, along with one around his waist. He often wears a mask or face cage crafted to look like fangs. This is partially to conceal his face and partially enhance his natural fear inducing powers.
Relationship: He hates his brother Demarcus for picking on him his entire youth.
Personality:
Save for feeling constant annoyance and contempt, Torment is emotionally dead. Ever since his powers awakened, he's spent years being feared by others through no fault of his own. He eventually grew fed up and fully embraced becoming the monster that many people believed him to be. He has little to no empathy for others; any compassion he may have had was emotionally beaten from him long ago. Because of his history, he hates being around other people. At best, he is apathetic about them. Solitude is the only thing that makes him feel the closest thing to happiness. Any attempts at trying to befriend him result in a hostile reaction.
Powers:
Nightmare Aura
Torment emits a supernatural aura that psychologically affects everyone in his range, making them nervous or afraid. He can intensify his aura as needed and it is always active; he cannot disable it. Prolonged exposure can cause hallucinations in people, distorting their perception of others or their surroundings to look more frightening. This tends to cause panic or hostility, which could lead to people attacking others, but it depends on the individual.
Torment takes advantage of his aura's hallucinatory state by dressing in intimidating clothing. This makes his appearance look even more monstrous to someone affected by the hallucinations, often rooting them to the spot in fear.
Beings that are magical or supernatural in some way have a better resistance to this passive aura, though it depends upon the individual. A creature from a different plane might be completely immune to it, while others might still feel some effects but aren't as bothered. Normal beings might be able to resist it as well if they're practiced with magic. ((Basically adjust its effects according to plot, lol))
Nightmare Touch
By physically touching someone with his hands, Torment's aura fully activates and consumes the person in a hallucinatory nightmare of their fears. This only happens with contact with his hands. He cannot control this power himself and must wear gloves or some other protective covering to prevent it from activating. He only has to touch someone briefly for the nightmare to happen. The nightmare will linger after he removes contact and will subside the longer time goes on or the further he gets away from a person, whichever comes first.
Falling victim to his brief touch can stun a person from anywhere to a few seconds to half a minute. A person can prevent, resist or snap out of the nightmare if their will or personality is strong enough, or if they mentally try to fight back. They can also dispel the nightmare if an outside party tries to help them out of it. This can be by calling their name or trying to shake them free or doing something that the afflicted person would react strongly to, positive or negative.
Unlike his aura, his touch can affect magical beings and creatures, though they still have better resistance to it than someone normal. People with strong wills or personalities can also resist or negate it. Attacking him also cancels the effects.
Weaponry: Axe, Chains, Hidden Blades
If forced into combat, Torment mainly fights with a large axe. He's a bit slow but powerful with it. If disarmed or caught without his axe, he can use the chains on his arms as whips to attack and keep people at bay. He also has concealed blades hidden on his legs that he can quickly attach to the ends of his chains, increasing their deadliness.
Weaknesses:
His powers are always active so he can't really interact with people without drawing suspicion or causing panic. This forces him to take a more covert or distant approach for dealing with people, such as relying on a third party for supplies or communication. Someone specialized in reading things like ki, auras and other similar life energy would also be able to detect him due to his aura always being activated. If he Nightmare Touches someone he's already recently touched, the nightmare's effect won't be as powerful, with "recent" being as long as the last few days or week. Otherwise, he can still be harmed by normal means.
History:
Born and raised in Aster City, James developed his natural fear inducing aura at a young age. He didn't notice it right away, but over time he came to realize that everyone felt unease around him... Animals, friends, and even his own family treated him differently. His older brother Demarcus felt especially threatened by him, leading to him picking on James almost every chance he could get. It agitated James to no end.

Animals, friends, and even his own family treated him differently. His older brother Demarcus felt especially threatened by him, leading to him picking on James almost every chance he could get. It agitated James to no end.
James wished he could make him pay, and his feelings of anger and resentment festered deep inside of him. This one day manifested into his true power. Tired of Demarcus' harassment, a single touch from James suddenly caused his brother to hallucinate a vivid nightmare. Demarcus screamed and panicked, crying out and sobbing. He was reduced to a vulnerable, shambling mess - something that James had never seen before from his brother. The trauma was so great that Demarcus finally left James alone. For a while, revenge was sweet and James savored it.
But James wasn't prepared for what followed. Like King Midas and his touch of gold, James found he could not control his own power. He'd inadvertently inflicted nightmares on others until he understood how his touch worked, but by that point the damage had been done. He had only been viewed with unease and fear before... and now he was viewed as a demonic monster. His family believed him to be haunted or possessed. He was subjected to all sorts of exorcisms and rituals to "cleanse" him, but none would dispel his power.
James grew to accept it. Even in Aster City, his ability only earned him fear and scorn. There was no relief or respite from all of the looks he'd receive, so in the end he found it easier to simply become the demon that everyone believed him to be. Taking up the alias Torment, he's since become a villain for hire, and is currently contracted by Lyle Truman to use his powers when needed.
Anything else:
- ow the edge
- He usually keeps his hands in his pockets out of habit, but will sometimes wear gloves as a formality.
- His job as a hired villain is to simply cause chaos, usually as a means of distraction rather than hurting anyone. Otherwise, this task is left to his partner Hellfire, while Torment uses the distraction as cover.
