Relationship:
He's sympathetic towards his creator, feeling the need to offer emotional support and friendship. Jedan seems to have a distant relationship with Zwei and Denomi, though this is because both tend to keep to themselves; Jedan's not adverse to interacting with them. He hasn't spoken with Quattuor or Terry for years since they left the base; there might be some faint feelings of disdain for Quattuor for his rash judgement that led him to take Terry and leave.
Personality:
Easily the most mature of the Eterna Units, Jedan spends much of his time thinking. He's surprisingly quick and resourceful, but one wouldn't guess it from his laid back, easy going demeanor. Even in hectic situations, he keeps a level head and an eerie calmness. He dislikes stressing over things, so his approach to it is to simply go with the flow. This can potentially come off as insultingly nonchalant, however. Jedan simply tries to see things for what they are and is more than willing to be bluntly about the truth. He values this honesty and believes it allows one to look at things more logically; he's no doubt had more than one conversation about it with his father and is more than willing to play devil's advocate.
Powers:
Eterna Shard
Jedan's power source that acts as his heart. Thanks to its power combined with his programming, Jedan's Eterna Shard allows him the ability to manipulate time. There are only a few varying levels of how he utilizes this ability and each one uses up a certain amount of energy from his Eterna Shard.
Teleportation
By warping space time, Jedan often teleports for traversing short distances, mostly for reaching a different height or dodging hazards. Quick teleports use up less power and can be used several times in a row with as little as half a second in between uses. Longer distances however, such as from Aster City to Klaus' fortress, require a long charge up and an even longer cool down, depending on how far Jedan travels. He generally cannot use teleportation after arriving at his long distance destination, so it's mostly used for travel outside of battle.
Eterna Dial
Jedan's ability to stop time for 4 to 5 seconds per use. Because it requires a high amount of energy, 5 seconds is the maximum amount that Jedan can safely keep time frozen for. If held for any longer, he risks using up the entirety of his Eterna Shard's power, and thus his life. He does have an internal lock set to automatically stop his ability at the maximum of 5 seconds, but it isn't the only threat. Using maximum second time stops immediately one after the other is also a danger to him. Doing so risks the Shard's power feeding back in on itself and creating a power surge, effectively causing him to explode. That said, he rarely uses this power for combat (if he even enters combat at all), but he has more than happily used it for parlor tricks or simple convenience.
Weaknesses
As stated above, overusing his time stopping ability in rapid succession or longer than 5 seconds risks disrupting the energy of his Eterna Shard core. The core either explodes or is drained of power, with both results killing him. (If he were to die from the latter, it seems he can only be revived by another Eterna Unit.) Jedan also seems to have some problems functioning after his first death, manifesting in the form of him being quick to fatigue. He tends to downplay this, especially to Dr. Klaus. This constant fatigue is one of the main reasons why he avoids combat and only sees it as a last resort option.
History:
Desiring to make sure the Eternalite was put to good use, Dr. Klaus designed and constructed an android specifically made to house a shard of the meteorite. The result was Jedan, the first Eterna Unit. Wielding the power to manipulate time, Dr. Klaus hoped to use his power to return to the past and fix his mistakes. Admittedly, this purpose wasn't as selfless as the doctor liked to think, but he was earnest in his endeavor.
Jedan's AI was advanced, but the nuance in his personality wasn't something Dr. Klaus had expected. Rather than obediently agreeing to assist his creator, Jedan questioned him. If the doctor wanted him to cooperate, why did he give him thought and feeling? If the doctor desired a time machine, why didn't he simply build a time machine? Why help the doctor when Jedan could just simply refuse? In all honesty, Dr. Klaus simply couldn't answer him. The best he could do was share his story.
Jedan knew the potential consequences of his time power. He knew he was given the ability to think for himself, and with that opportunity he sought to judge his creator. And of course, he learned... the man was lonely. The doctor, though isolated, cared deeply about what others thought of him. Jedan saw that he was constantly haunted by his failures, and only desired to undo them through time travel. And more importantly... that loneliness is probably what drove him to build an android with thoughts and feelings. He didn't want a mere machine - he needed someone to share his emotions with. Satisfied with his assessment, Jedan agreed to help the doctor. Of course, time travel wasn't so simple; especially when Jedan's power was a mere fraction of such a concept.
So, over several months, the pair worked together on the project. Dr. Klaus immersed himself in calculations while Jedan underwent extensive testing, constantly refining several methods to most effectively harness his power. When the time finally came to initiate the plan, Dr. Klaus was apprehensive. Even with all of their preparations, the method was still dangerous. It wasn't helped by the fact that the doctor had developed a fondness for Jedan, coming to see him as a son. Though he still desired to fix his mistakes, he didn't wish to put Jedan in harm's way. Jedan, of course, was more than willing to take part and encouraged him to do the same.
The process of opening a time portal began fine, but Jedan was forced to exert himself far more than was expected, putting extreme stress on his body and Eterna Shard. In that moment, Dr. Klaus had a crisis of conscience, but ultimately decided to go through with the plan. It was a choice he'd regret; he only managed to catch a glimpse of the past before everything went awry.
The stress of Jedan's exertion caused a dangerous surge of Eternium. The android did everything he could to contain it, but he couldn't: the portal collapsed, the machine broke and an explosion followed. When Dr. Klaus recovered, he quickly rushed to Jedan's side, apologizing for his selfishness. In turn, a fatally damaged Jedan apologized for his own failure before dying.
Or so he thought.
The next thing Jedan remembered was waking up to a brief but thunderous tremor throughout the base. He was sore but found his body tingling and coursing with a fresh charge of Eternium. Hobbling to his feet in a weakened state, he managed to work his way to the main room. There, he found the source of what was apparently an Eternium surge: another Eterna Unit. Jedan had overheard the doctor speaking to this new android. The man was relishing in the idea of wreaking havoc on the research facility where he once worked. Jedan spoke up, admonishing the man - this isn't what they'd worked for at all!
Dr. Klaus himself was stunned. It had been over a year since the time portal experiment; he had tried everything to revive him, but to no avail; he thought Jedan was gone for good. Dr. Klaus was elated to see him again, but conflicted. If Jedan's death was the catalyst for his anger and hatred he harbored deep inside, then Jedan's revival was the first glimpse of hope outside of that spiral. The doctor was not so quick to relent, however; though he felt guilty about disappointing his first son, he felt that he could not simply turn back. After all, Zwei had learned of all of the injustices that had been done to the doctor, but rather than work to fix the past, Zwei desired to avenge all that had been done wrong to Dr. Klaus. Jedan appreciated his enthusiasm but disagreed with his answer. The result: a fight between the two.
Dr. Klaus was reluctant to listen to Jedan. He could only stand by, conflicted as they battled. Jedan's revival sickness left him at a disadvantage, but he refused to let Zwei leave and harm innocent people. Zwei eventually got the advantage, but the doctor eventually made his choice and intervened, catching Zwei off guard with a taser and allowing Jedan a finishing blow.
Dr. Klaus apologized, deciding Zwei was too dangerous to keep around. Jedan disagreed, arguing to give him another shot. The doctor was shocked, but Jedan pointed out he was created because he wanted a second chance; why not do the same for Zwei?
Apprehensive, Dr Klaus agreed. Upon fixing and reactivation via an Eternium Charge from Jedan, the elder android spoke with Zwei, further explaining Dr. Klaus' side of the story. Zwei still disagreed, quietly leaving the room with a "hmph." The next few days were uneasy as Zwei continued to lurk about, but with enough time it eventually became clear that he would do no harm. He showed no ill intent and eventually would show himself from time to time, making comments or curiously prying more into the doctor's past. Jedan has developed a sort of fondness and a distant friendship with him, though Zwei would beg to differ.
Jedan continues to live with Dr. Klaus in his base, mostly leaving to retrieve supplies or scout Aster City himself. He's picked up some bounty hunting, though he tries to generally remain discreet. He enjoys spending his evenings at bars and entertaining others with parlor tricks.
Anything else:
- Design still pending but he most likely wears a leather jacket.
- He actually has a pink/red visor that can extend from his white robot "ears," although he's content to wear normal sunglasses. He often has a regular pair on his face or his head.
- The inner circle of his robot "ears" are actually ports and allow him to plug cables into them.
- The animal shaped ears are meant to be stylistic vents that allow him to cool his system off more easily. People tend to assume they're cat ears and that he's a cat person. The comparison eventually led him to a small fondness for cats.
-
- He actually uses his time stop ability to do card tricks; he's pretty mediocre at actual sleight of hand.
- A bartender friend taught him how to do fortune telling with tarot cards. Jedan doesn't quite believe in the fortunes himself, but he enjoys it as a fun hobby.
