Relationships: The wife of Johnathan O'Connor who ran away. She’s still technically married to him, as they were never formally divorced, but she despises him all the same. She's currently in an oddly intimate relationship with Keith Shepherd, a serum-afflicted science colleague. It's more for experimental than romantic reasons, but she deeply trusts him enough that they continue to work well together. Their relationship lead to Mary having a hybrid daughter, Lydia. While Mary gives her care and affection, sometimes it's hard to tell if its out of genuine love or if she's more interested in Lydia for the science of it.
Personality: Formerly a shy young woman who dreamed of a happy domestic life, Mary fell deeply in love with John, eager to follow him wherever he went. Once she discovered his strange patients, she was deeply startled by his hidden secret and underwent a state of shock. When she recovered, she was far less optimistic about the world, carefully guarding her feelings and trying to remove them from situations when she could. The only exception to this was her resolution to counter her husband’s brainwashing experiments. While her intentions were good, desiring to “free” any of those affected by his therapy, using herself as a test subject resulted in amplifying her emotions to highly feral levels, making her much more intense and almost single minded in pursuing her goal of stopping John. That said, while she still truly means well deep down, this now tends to be clouded by her strong feelings and gut instincts.
Powers:
Animal Abilities:
Thanks to the various serums she’s injected into herself, Mary has gained several traits and abilities from specially selected apex predators, sharpening her instinct at the cost of sometimes making it more difficult for her to think clearly and rationally as a human would.
Panthera Power
Mary's most prominent trait and default appearance. Her abilities borrow closely from the snow leopard, which are visible on her in the form of the beast's ears, tail, and claws. Her strength is greatly increased, particularly in her legs, allowing her to leap down from great heights and land without harm. This also allows her to run for an extended period of time. Her sense of balance is also heightened, allowing her to run and rebound off of unconventional surfaces, such as a lightpost. Mary's claws can also retract, extend and thicken to a certain degree to alter the severity of her slashes and rakes. Her stealth is also exceptional; she often uses it to enter and exit rooms undetected. Finally, her enhanced sight allows her to see things more clearly at night; perfect for stalking her targets. While having all of these traits make Mary no doubt powerful, she tends to exhibit more feral tendencies because of them, causing her to sometimes act irrationally.
Hawk Power
When utilizing the abilities from birds of prey, Mary will sprout a small layer of feathers from her arms and backside, while a small crest of them appear on her head. With them, she can glide short distances from high points. She also has highly enhanced sight, enabling her to discern a target's camouflage from the slightest means of movement, such as their breathing. Though she maintains this alongside her default snow leopard abilities, creating a hybrid form, she cannot attack with her claws while gliding. Attacking will end her glide and force her to drop, so she's vulnerable while airborne.
Reptilian Power
Mary rarely utilizes her abilities from this pool, which mostly allows her to manifest scaley, armored plating to protect her body. While very durable, enabling her to deflect gunfire and other projectiles, Mary dislikes using it because of how heavy and hampering it is. Depending on how long she maintains the armor, it also has a long cooldown period, as it tends to fatigue her and dull the abilities of her other powers. It only becomes usable again after she's been well rested or after 1-3 days have passed.
Humane Pill
Mary developed a counter serum in the form of a pill that temporarily suppresses her feral instincts, letting her retain a certain level of humanity that allows her to go about her day to day activities. This eliminates her abilities entirely and removes any visibly animals traits on her body. This means she cannot use her enhanced abilities as she has no access to them. This suppression lasts for about 8 to 9 hours before it wears off and cannot be cancelled. While she can take extra doses to extend the suppression, it comes at the cost of her behaving more feral and unpredictable once it wears off, unless she goes straight to sleep right after.
History:
Once a modest woman now corrupted by a terrifying, single minded goal, it all began when Mary fell for the enigmatic Dr. Johnathan O'Connor. Meeting the man in Aster City, the two were wed in their youth and quickly settled down, much to the surprise of Mary's friends and family. It had only been a year since she had met him, but Mary was smitten; Johnathan was soft spoken and kind with a penchant for knowing exactly how she felt. Combined with his steady income, Mary looked forward to living at home to focus on raising their future children.
Their infant son was barely a few months old when Mary discovered a hidden room while cleaning the basement. In it, she discovered a multitude of people waiting in eerie silence. Frightened by the unexpected company, Mary frantically questioned one of the people what they were doing there. The answer was not what she had expected: they simply replied that they were waiting for the doctor to return. She tried to urge them to leave, but they stayed put, displaying a strong loyalty to this "doctor." Panic slowly welled up within Mary. They didn't mean Johnathan... did they? "He wouldn't do such a thing," she thought, but as the woman tried to convince herself otherwise, there was no denying it: her beloved husband was up to something, and he had been hiding it from her... for who knows how long. What exactly he was hiding, she had no idea, but the young woman was too terrified to find out just what. Fearful that Johnathan would return home early and catch her, Mary quickly packed what she could and fled with her child.
Panicked at the drastic turn in her life, Mary couldn't bear the thought of continuing to raise the child she had with Johnathan. She didn't think she could handle the responsibility on her own, let alone hold herself together whenever she looked at her son and remembered her husband. So, with a heavy heart, she left her son at an orphanage and escaped from Aster City.
Mary spent the next year or so living with her parents, slowly recovering from the shock. She hadn't told them anything of what happened and remained despondent. Hoping to help their daughter, Mary's parents encouraged her to return to school and seek out a new path for herself. Though she remained depressed, she obliged. This is when she was struck with motivation. After taking a psychology class and gaining a better insight of what Jonathan may have been doing, Mary was inspired to try and combat whatever it was he had done. From what she understood, the people she had seen that day had been conditioned... no, brainwashed. And with no one else knowing his secret, Mary decided to take it upon herself to figure out how to resist and reverse his effects.
Mary ended up dedicating her studies to biology and animal behavior, or specifically: instinct. During this time, she met a colleague named Keith Shepherd and the two became close friends. Keith eventually became concerned with how much Mary pushed herself in their research, neglecting her own health in the process. Mary responded by opening up to him about her past experience with John, revealing her true reasoning for her studies. Surprised he was the first person she had ever told about this, Keith was empathetic towards her situation and was motivated more than ever to assist Mary, doing what he could to look out for her.
After graduation, the two continued to work together, with Mary eventually developing a strange serum meant to bring out one's heightened instincts of self preservation. Keith volunteered to be the first test subject, much to Mary's discomfort. Upon injecting the serum, Keith's senses were indeed sharpened - at the cost of transforming him into a werewolf-like creature. Mary was distraught with the transformation, but Keith assured her it was fine, despite being just as distressed. Though he quickly learned to adapt to his new form, Mary refused to let him suffer any more side effects, and instead opted to test her serums in secret - on herself.
Over time, Mary was able to perfect a various number of different serums, all of which had varying enhancements of instinct or levels of transformation. Having used a number of them on herself, Mary had also become a very competent fighter - at the cost of driving her senses to frighteningly primal levels. This tended to cloud her judgement and rationale, which gradually changed her noble desire to save people to a single minded drive to "defeat" Johnathan once and for all. In an attempt to counter this, Mary developed an antidote pill that only temporarily suppresses her feral instincts, letting her to retain a certain level of humanity that allows her to go about her day to day activities.
Now in better control of her abilities and armed with her "solution," Mary finally returned to Aster City, ready to face the man she once called her husband. With Keith by her side, along with their hybrid daughter Lydia, Mary has been raising a small army of humans-turned-primal in secret, all in hopes of putting an end to Johnathan and his activities. Unfortunately, not everything has gone as planned, as there have been a few questionable incidents around the city involving Mary's creations...
