Personality:
A calm man with a dry tone, Dr. Amity seems apathetic to most human interaction. He has little interest or respect for other sentient beings, viewing them as objects to be manipulated or used. If a person could potentially serve his interests however, he will attempt to be kind or decent to them. Otherwise, he cares little for pleasantries and points out that he’s at least honest about this fact. The only thing that brings him genuine joy is reckless, “experimental” science, which might as well be classified as torture, if not a level beyond that. Dr. Amity is aware that others look down upon this however and usually keeps this pleasure under wraps, but most people can tell that there’s something eerie and off putting about him.
Powers:
Mechanical Engineering - Dr. Amity’s greatest strength is his proficiency in manufacturing various forms of technology. He’s picked up computer science in the modern era, but generally excels at manufacturing prosthetics. He’s often being contracted by various, big name companies. He’s more concerned with observation and experimentation however, so he has no real interest in creating massive weapons or the like.
Anatomy Studies & “Genetic Engineering” - Dr. Amity’s actual favorite area of study, he employs his tech to often dissect his captured subjects. His interest is all for the sake of observation, though he does enjoy watching others’ reactions to pain as well. Lately he’s been trying to graft parts of creatures onto others and has been venturing into altering genetic coding to achieve similar results.
Metal Skull - A metal casing he made for half of his head after an “accident” in the lab. He purposely keeps it bare and unpolished as a means of unnerving people for his amusement. The casing connects to his mechanical eye, which connects to his computer systems and allows him to access all of his personal databases and information on a whim; at the cost of distracting himself from what he’s doing, of course. His eye itself is based on a chameleon’s, allowing it to look in several different directions independent from his normal eye. (Again, he enjoys doing this to freak people out.)
Eyes of Amity - A floating swarm of eerie mechanical eyes, they’re Dr. Amity’s most often utilized technology. Anything they see is transmitted to Dr. Amity’s mechanical eye, allowing him to easily observe from afar. The Eyes usually fly around in clusters of 5, but can sometimes be found alone or even in a group of 100. They do not have any attacks other than physically ramming a foe, though there are occasionally some larger sized, solitary Eyes that can fire a laser. If there’s enough Eyes present, they can swarm target to the point of constriction and carry them away.
The Eyes are strongest when they swarm in numbers. This is because, individually, they’re rather fragile and can normally be taken out in one shot. They are also susceptible to being attacked from behind if a group is looking in one direction, as the individual Eyes do not have peripheral vision. Knowing this, Amity tries to position them tactically if dealing with a hostile target. He also always has more Eyes being manufactured in his lab, but it still takes time to send them out and reach the same location where another swarm was knocked out.
Weaknesses: Despite all of the grand technology available at his fingertips, Dr. Amity is still rather frail with no powers and a physical handicap. If one manages to get past his technology, the best he can do is hunker down behind last resort tech or simply try to escape.
History:
Calvin was the troubling child who would always go out of his way to kill bugs. Not just step on them, but slowly squishing them until they oozed, watching the strange stains they made. This persisted into his adolescence, where he was sometimes found torturing stray animals. He was fairly low key about this, doing this many times until his parents caught him in the process of killing a squirrel. Realizing they saw this as a problem, Calvin dialed back his morbid habits; because the last thing a teenager wanted was to be sat down and talked to about what he should and shouldn’t do. So, he continued his strange fascination with disfiguring life but kept it to himself, continuing to harbor them in thoughts and secret drawings.
Hoping retain the bare minimum image of “normal” in his adulthood, Calvin pursued various degrees in science, particularly anatomy. He found particular delight in observing and dissecting cadavers; it was the closest he could get to justifying cutting things open and examining their insides for the fun of it. However, wanting to find a practical, money-making application for it was another thing. This eventually lead to him picking up prosthesis, which ended up being the perfect fit for his strange fascination. Calvin, now officially Dr. Amity, was allowed to take down every minute detail of human dissections without it seeming strange, and use that information to create prosthetic limbs - a market so specialized, he could surely make some profit.
Initially, his prosthetic limbs allowed basic functions, but the lack of competition made it easy for him scale his price for commissions. As time went on, however, the rise of more affordable and higher quality options became more available, forcing Amity to increase the caliber of his own prosthetics. Constantly staying ahead of the curve was a bit of a struggle, but luckily, this is when his fixation finally came back into play.
With the money he had earned over the years at this point, Dr. Amity now had his own time, space, and equipment to afford purchasing his own specimens - or even taking ones off of the street. With it, he would use it to dissect others while they were still living, enjoying both the subject’s pain and science that would come from it. This secret “study” is what allowed Dr. Amity to go even more in depth of anatomy, allowing him to create even more accurate, realistic prosthetics.
Now nearly unmatched in his field, Dr. Amity eventually grew bored of his vivisections, and sought to find... something new. That was when he recalled hearing of an odd city. It a strange place apparently founded as sanctuary for hybrids, but over the years it attracted... many other sorts, as well. Excited by the possible specimens he could find there, Dr. Amity packed up and moved to none other than Aster City.
Now living there for at least 10 years - maybe more - Dr. Amity comfortably takes individual, high paying contracts for prosthetics to fund his studies, all without ever having to leave his lab. He actually has a luxury apartment in the city, but he rarely lives in it. If anything, he uses it as a trap to “befriend” others, allowing them to visit and enjoy the opulence of his home, lulling them into a false sense of security before taking them away to his secret lab, hidden somewhere on the outskirts of the city.
Currently, he’s intrigued by news reports of strange, magical beast possessing the same traits as the creatures he had placed into in a transforming serum he had modified...
Anything else:
- He’s usually contracted by big companies like Heliosoft and Cross Corps to make designs or prototypes for them. He specifically created Jack’s cybernetic eye.
- While his profile emphasizes his skill in mechanical prosthetics, Dr. Amity does do other “science” so long as it means he can cut up a specimen for it, leading to the aforementioned serum modification.
- His name is supposed to be a pun on “calamity.”
