Name: Rivet Honorton & Pulse
Age: 20 (Rivet), 3 (Pulse)
Race: Human (Rivet), mechanical familiar (Pulse)
Powers:
- Rivet has a familiar named Pulse that follows her around. When needed, Pulse can transform into a magical firearm (based off of an anti-tank rifle). Upon Rivet's request it can fire a variety of magical ammo types, including elemental (fire, water, air) and technological (stun, healing). While much more versatile than a non-magical firearm, it is not as lethal as a regular gun and is designed for incapacitation rather than killing. In place of physical ammunition, firing the weapon expends some of the user's energy, and the longer Rivet spends in a firefight the more tired she gets.
- Rivet doesn't move fast, and she moves even slower when carrying Pulse in its gun form (which is heavy). While her weapon is powerful and she prides herself on her accuracy, she has little close-range combat ability and can get easily overwhelmed if she can't keep her distance.
- Rivet and Pulse's souls are bound together. If Rivet dies, Pulse disappears; if Pulse dies, Rivet suffers a complete mental collapse.
Date of birth: 4/30 (Rivet), 7/1 (Pulse)
Home: An apartment in the city (temporary residence)
Alignment: Lawful neutral (both Rivet & Pulse)
Relationship: Rivet and Pulse have a master/familiar relationship. Working partners and roommates with Desmond Zener, another gunner. Subordinate of a commander named Paul Lancet. Has parents, but no longer keeps in touch with them.
Job: Along with Desmond, a magical gunner in a secret society called the Order of Frionel.
Appearance:
Rivet is 5'10", normal build. She has dark gray hair, not quite black, that goes down to her collar and covers her left eye. Her eyes are dark blue. She typically wears a black and beige uniform, and carries with her a tall, narrow bag that hides Pulse while in gun form.
Pulse (in non-weapon form) is a 10-inch-tall floating black octahedron with dark brown markings, orbited by two silver holographic rings. It doesn't have any facial features, but can still speak because *magic*.
Personality:
Rivet has extreme difficulty speaking, to the point where even finishing full sentences is a challenge. Because of that, she typically relies on her familiar Pulse to speak on her behalf. When Pulse is in gun form (and thus can't speak), she makes every effort to avoid contact with people, which makes her seem colder than she really is.
Feeling that she owes a debt to the secret society that took her in, she not only follows each of her commander's orders to a T, but takes great pride in doing so. She's not one to question orders, believing that even if something doesn't feel right, there's probably a good reason for it. With few other interests, Rivet has built her identity around her job, believing that if she fails in her job then she has failed herself as well.
Although she tries to hide it, she has a weakness for cute things, which her partner Desmond taunts mercilessly.
Rivet's familiar Pulse, whose main purpose outside of combat is to speak in Rivet's place, is very much in sync with her feelings and desires. Its speech pattern is polite but to-the-point, and it is more concerned with being clear than friendly, which can also rub people the wrong way.
History:
Rivet's parents were distant and never particularly interested in raising a child, leading her to spend most of her early years by herself. As a result, her speech was underdeveloped and she performed poorly in school, both academically and socially. On the verge of expulsion, her high school paired her with a tutor one year younger than her named Desmond. He wasn't a great tutor, but he was a good friend.
Rivet dropped out of school, ran away from home and went to live with Desmond. She learned that he and his father were members of the "Order of Frionel," a secret society of mages, scientists, and engineers researching the separation of body and soul. They were reluctant to take her in (on account of it being secret) but agreed on one condition - that she take part in a special process called the Severance, said to grant magical power in exchange for splitting one's soul in two. She agreed, and on the same day as Desmond she underwent the process, leading to the birth of Pulse, her familiar.
Over the next couple years she trained rigorously in the Order to become a gunfighter, while becoming more comfortable interacting with people thanks to Pulse's ability to speak in her place. After becoming a full-fledged gunner, she received a mission from her commander, Paul Lancet, that another Order gunner had gone rogue and was in hiding. With next to no leads, Lancet partnered her and Desmond together and ordered them to search for clues in Aster City, a city known for its unusually high prevalence of magic.
Anything else:
Her last name is based on Charles Honorton, a parapsychologist who performed ESP experiments. This isn't really relevant to her character but the last few characters I've role-played as have had ESP-related names (Ganz/Feld and Zener) so *shrugs*
