Name: Demarcus King
Alias: X-Caliber (former Ammo Clan nickname)
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Race: Human
Date of birth: 19XX
Quote: "Heh... Maybe brute force ain't always the right way... but it's my way!"
Home: Aster City
Alliance: Templars; formerly Ammo Clan (Chaotic Neutral)
Family: James King (brother)
Friends: Ammo Clan: Aedan Devitt, Switch, Omega Reload, Jack Baumer, Casey Calhoun; Dexi Ravian
Rivals: Aedan Devitt
Enemies: ?
Likes: Fighting, training
Dislikes: Weak opponents, ghost/spirits, the paranormal
Relationships: He enjoyed the company of the rest of Ammo Clan and got along best with Jack Brunckhorst. He held much respect for Aedan Devitt, considering him a worthy opponent. Although now a foot soldier for the Templars, he hasn't developed a the same level of camaraderie with any of its members as he did with Ammo Clan.
Personality: Initially sort of a bully and a jerk, his idea of comradeship involved a bit of insults and scuffling. However, once Demarcus had someone to understand him and help him better communicate with others, he learned to moderate his actions. In spite of this, he was still pretty rough around the edges and always had a chance of going a little too far. He also never heeded the words of just anyone; it took someone with power and strength to earn his respect. When he later joined the Templars in search of a challenge, the noble side of their ideals taught him self-discipline. He grew a bit more mature and reserved when it came to interacting with others, but he remains pretty boisterous and eager to fight. He's maintained a tactful level of sass and teasing as well. He still can't help but get a bit excited when facing a strong opponent, and still believes those with power are worth his respect.
Powers:
Strength & Durability:
Though his strength isn't quite superhuman, it's definitely close, being his best combat trait. Achieved with nonstop training, he often uses it to overwhelm his opponents. This makes him best suited to close ranged, one on one fights. He can also be frighteningly agile if need be, but again, this usually only applies to one on one fights. This is partially because he had trained to box in his preteen years. Because of this, he also has better experience fighting with his fists, as well as his upper body strength being somewhat more controlled and powerful than his leg strength. However, he dropped his training early on, so his skills aren't as well refined as a legitimate professional boxer. As he sees it, his raw power is more than enough to make up for the lack of his finesse, but his attacks remain basic and become rather predictable if an opponent can drag out a fight against him long enough.
Since he prefers his fights to be more physical in nature, he seems to wear less armor compared to other Templars in order to make it easier for himself to move around. Much of his training (especially in Ammo Clan) has also made him much more durable in withstanding physical attacks, as well as heightening his endurance somewhat. And while his armor does have mild enhancements to lessen the power of magic used against him, his choice to wear minimal armor means he's most susceptible to magical attacks. He’s especially freaked out by ghosts and spiritual things and is obviously more hesitant to fight them.
Weapon: Eisenherz (Iron Heart)
A huge oversized broadsword with a flat tip, it's less of a sword and more like a rectangular slab of iron. Although it has no particular magical affinity, Demarcus’ sheer force of power allows him to cause tremors if he slams his weapon into the ground, or even split the ground itself. Being made of iron also makes it particularly deadly towards fairies/fey creatures. The Eisenherz is also large and thick enough to shield him from physical attacks too, should he position it to defend himself.
In spite of this, he doesn’t have many techniques with his weapon due to preferring to rely on his raw power to end fights quickly.
History:
Born in Aster City, Demarcus was raised alongside his younger brother James. Some time during their childhood, James developed a strange ability - an unseen, passive aura of sorts - that brought unease and fear to those around him. Although Demarcus wasn’t spared from the effects - which he was unaware was a supernatural power - he refused to show his fear. Instead, he coped with it by picking on his younger brother.
In his early teen years, Demarcus took up boxing. His power proved to be phenomenal for his age, but it was otherwise clumsy and unfocused. Seeing his potential, Demarcus’ coach promised to help him hone his skills, believing that he had a promising future as a professional boxer. Demarcus himself was excited at the prospect and found much joy in the sport. While he gained the confidence to excel in other areas that he hadn’t before - like school - he still found himself hesitating in the presence of his brother.
To continue coping with this constant unease, he continued giving James a hard time in order to reassure himself. Unfortunately for Demarcus, one too many jabs at his brother lead to a major turning point in both of their lives:
The awakening of James’ true power.
Almost nonchalantly, James had activated it without so much as batting an eye, and before Demarcus knew it, he experienced a horrifyingly vivid vision of dying in the ring. Death wasn’t even a threat that Demarcus had thought about when it came to boxing. Hell, he hadn’t even considered the possibility of being crippled by the sport! But it was (unfortunately) thanks to his brother that these fears were realized, because that was James’ power: the ability to make someone experience their greatest fear.
Discouraged, Demarcus quit boxing and kept his distance from James as far as possible, believing his power to be some sort of otherworldly curse. Unfulfilled and frustrated with his wasted power, Demarcus grew bitter and began to cope with his feelings by taking it out on others, just as he did before with his brother. Part of this was the personal shame he felt for chickening out of something he enjoyed, while the other part was securely knowing his life was safe so long as he went after those weaker than him. The challenge might have been gone, but the adrenaline rush of victory, no matter how cheap, still remained.
Demarcus quickly gained a reputation as aheat weak-seeking bully. By late high school, this eventually gained the attention of someone named Aedan Devitt. When Aedan appeared to him in person, Demarcus scoffed at the smaller teen who was apparently interested in giving him a “proper” fight. Aedan paid no mind to his attitude and offered him this: should he himself win, Demarcus would promise to stop picking on others. Demarcus accepted, knowing full well that he could easily overpower anyone.
But Aedan defeated him with experience and technique.
Furious, Demarcus claimed the victory to be a fluke. So, good natured as ever, Aedan offered a rematch, but with a different condition: should he win again, Demarcus would... come join Aedan to train and fight with his friends. Though he considered this a potential threat, Demarcus’ own pride overruled his cautious reasoning and he accepted the rematch. Again, Aedan was victorious.
It was only after a third rematch that Demarcus gained respect for Aedan. It was the first time in a long time that Demarcus found himself putting full effort into a fight, even though he lost once more. Awed by Aedan’s abilities, Demarcus declared a newfound rivalry and vowed to one day defeat him. He then followed Aedan as promised, accompanying him to his group of friends: Ammo Clan.
The gang was initially annoyed with Demarcus’ appearance, having heard of his cowardly, asinine reputation. People ignored him at best, and were hostile towards him at worst. Aedan, however, pointed out that any frustrations they had with Demarcus could simply be taken out on him in a fight. He didn’t mean this as encouragement to gang up on him either, and quickly corrected anyone who thought otherwise. Aedan knew that everyone in Ammo Clan had come together because they enjoyed fighting, so what better way to communicate was there than to spar with each other?
Until someone else would take up his suggestion, Aedan was the only one who would spar with Demarcus. He was still a bit rough around the edges, but with enough sparring sessions and Aedan’s presence to help the others understand him better, Demarcus curbed his nastier tendencies and managed to develop that into a vitriolic camaraderie with Ammo Clan. As it turns out, part of his mean-spiritedness was actually his sense of humor, which he hadn’t realized was as abrasive as it came out to be. Fortunately for him, Jack Brunckhorst had a similar sense of humor and the two quickly became best friends. Demarcus was at some point given the nickname “X-Caliber” as a playful jab at his personality being anything but chivalrous.
Once again motivated, Demarcus strived to one day best Aedan. Gone were the days fearing the vision of his death; he sought to train in spite of it and make up for the years he lost in boxing by becoming the strongest he could hope to be.
It was only when Aedan went missing years later that Demarcus found himself fearing death once more - not for himself, but for his friend and rival. Although he no longer had the immediate chance to defeat Aedan in a fight, Demarcus knew he could still train to become as powerful as Aedan inspired him to achieve. With his rival gone but his determination resolved, he took part in the group fight to determine Ammo Clan’s leadership before deciding his new path. When Casey Calhoun won, he bid him good luck and told him he was setting off to find another challenge. While there was already talk of Jack leaving, Demarcus’ departure was surprising. Casey respected his decision however and they amicably parted ways.
Demarcus left to think for some time, eventually finding inspiration to live up to the origins of his nickname X-Caliber. Wanting to continue his training and better discipline himself, he joined the Templars. Although he's already spent a year or two with the group, he's contentedly remained a foot soldier. If anything, he's happy to finally be using his physical power for not just himself, but for a good cause - or so he thinks, anyway.
Regardless of the Templars’ motives, Demarcus continues to train himself and seeks to fight the best that Aster City has to offer.
Anything else:
- Demarcus’ fear of the supernatural was influenced by his brother James, who he still believes to be haunted, rather than superpowered.
- Having no major bad experiences during his time in the Templars, he dismisses bad gossip he hears about the group, believing them to be wild rumors (unless proven otherwise, such as the school incident.)
