Personality:
A calm, quiet man with a blade at his hip, he generally seems to keep to himself. As he highly values integrity, he is honest and usually expects the same out of others. He’s a bit naive when it comes to dealing with people with ulterior motives, and those who betray his trust might face the end of his blade. Because of this, Katsurou is careful about who he lets his guard down around and often appears to be stoic because of it. If in the company of people who pose no threat, he is much more relaxed and bit more friendly. Though humble and aware he still has much to learn, he can be alarmingly fierce when it comes to standing up for others.
Powers:
Having grown up in a small rural village, Katsurou often helped with manual labor. Constant farming and hunting, combined with the training from his mentor, allowed him to forge high stamina and a respectable amount of strength. He also wears light armor on his upper body and legs.
Although strong unarmed, his power is best suited for wielding a blade. He possesses incredible striking speed with his sword, though this can probably be matched by other swordsmen with enough training. Katsurou is also capable of utilizing several ice sword techniques, though this requires being in a proper state of mind... Perhaps this involves the belief in his ideals.
Because of his integrity, he will usually fight fair in a one on one fight. Since he expects the same out of his opponent, he can sometimes be countered with deception and trickery, depending on how it’s used. Aggravating him enough can also cloud his judgement while fighting, making it easier to bait him into openings.
Weapon: 狼牙 Rōga (Rouga) (Wolf’s Fang)
A katana forged specifically for Katsurou, he keeps it sheathed on his side.
History:
Born in a small mountain village, Katsurou’s father is unknown while his mother died shortly after childbirth. He was taken in by Jiro Kuroda, the local swordsmanship instructor, who raised Katsurou to the best of his ability. At a young age, the boy grew fascinated with Jiro’s swordplay skill, often pleading him to teach him. Although reluctant, Jiro eventually obliged, seeing it as a good opportunity for Katsurou to learn self defense.
During Katsurou’s teens, an outsider appeared in the village, claiming to be a representative of a business group called Daedalus. The group was interested in establishing a mining operation in the village’s location. Though this meant relocation for the villagers, the company offered to compensate them for cooperating. Thanks to Jiro’s convincing, the villagers politely replied with an unanimous “no thank you,” but Daedalus continued to persist in their request as time went on.
One day, while Jiro and Katsurou were out training, Jiro spotted a platoon of ominous looking men in the distance. Though uncertain of their intentions, he noted they were headed toward village and could only assume the worst. Before going ahead to confront them, Jiro ordered Katsurou to return to the village and warn the people to evacuate - just in case. Though Katsurou initially protested, wanting to stay behind and help his mentor, Jiro convinced him that the safety of the village was more important.
Katsurou did as he was told, returning and helping the inhabitants escape. With the village cleared out, he hid out in one of the homes, waiting for any sign of his teacher or the men they had seen earlier. When the latter arrived, one thing became clear: they were special ops. Interestingly enough, Katsurou noticed their numbers were a bit lower... That had to be Jiro’s work. But where was Jiro?
Then, the men presented something before the empty village: Jiro’s corpse.
Unaware that its inhabitants escaped, one of the men threatened the village to surrender to Daedalus so that they would be spared from Jiro’s fate. Shocked, then enraged, Katsurou left his hiding place and appeared behind the platoon. Before they could react, Katsurou attacked them in tranquil fury, slaughtering the remaining special ops.
From that point on, Katsurou vowed to protect the village in memory of his mentor. Though the villagers were safe, they were alarmed to learn that Daedalus had attempted to take their land by brute force. Because of this, they began building a second settlement elsewhere. Once it was constructed and the villagers began to slowly move out, it was decided that the last group to leave would bury the old village under a rock slide so that not even Daedalus could use the land.
Katsurou was upset by this - he had promised to protect the village, but now they were allowing it to be destroyed, even after standing their ground against Daedalus. He understood it was for the best, but... He wanted to honor Jiro’s last request to protect the village. However, the village elder pointed out that a village was its people, not its land. Though Jiro did say to protect the village, Katsurou did so by warning the people to escape. This moment of clarity allowed Katsurou to finally come to terms with the idea of his old home being destroyed. With that, he helped the others set off the rock slide and escorted the group to the new village.
Once he was sure that the the villagers were safe and settled, Katsurou eventually left home in hopes of growing stronger. As he traveled around Japan, he noticed there were many people just as awful as the men who were sent to slaughter his home. Being exposed to such injustices also helped him realize another side of protecting others: not everyone could be as strong as him and his mentor. It is the responsibility of the strong to protect the weak, and Jiro died doing just that. Wanting to put his strength to good use, Katsurou became a vigilante, earning him the local nickname “The White Wolf of Bishamon.”
Katsurou has since left Japan years ago. He continued to travel the world and hone his skills, lending his blade to the helpless along the way. It seems he’s ended up in Aster City...
Anything else:
- Katsurou can speak and understand English, but he might have a bit of trouble reading it...
- His nickname, “The White Wolf of Bishamon” (毘沙門の白い狼 Bishamon no Shiroi Ōkami) is a play on his name and his nature:
- Katsurou is normally written as 勝郎, with 郎 rou meaning “son.” However, his name is written as 勝狼; the second character, 狼 rou, is the character for “wolf.”
- His surname, Shirogane, is made up of 白 shiro, meaning “white,” and 鉄 gane, meaning “iron.” (While literally “white iron,” Shirogane is also the word used to describe silver or platinum.)
- Bishamon is a Buddhist deity and one of the Four Heavenly Kings. In Japan, he’s perceived as “a god of warriors and punisher of evildoers.”
