Job: Psychotherapist
Relationship: Johnathan tolerates his brothers if he must. He keeps up appearances with clients and those who consider him a friend, but in truth he views everyone else as beneath him. His most trusted subordinates are Sean MacGowan and Julia Hertzfeld.
Personality:
Johnathan appears to be a reserved, serious man. Even when acting amicable, his emotions seem to be carefully reigned in. He is best described as professional, maintaining a calm but firm demeanor. Even if irked, he always appears composed. Despite this, he seems to be personable enough to help others through their troubles and is said to have his clients' best interests at heart.
This however, is a carefully cultivated lie. Years of observing and treating clients - some with highly disturbing cases - simply dulled what little emotion and empathy John had. He's learned to see recurring patterns in all people he worked with, coming to the conclusion that everyone was simply beneath him. The predictability of people also led to John developing a morbid sense of curiosity, leading him to manipulate his clients into subservient followers. He exploits their loyalty to satisfy his whims, mostly using them to push against the boundaries of morality; simply because he finds it mentally stimulating.
John keeps these intentions to himself however, and they're generally impossible to discern upon a cursory meeting. He excels at keeping up normal appearances, though he's willing to subtly poke and prod at someone's insecurities or emotional vulnerabilities if his benevolence isn't enough to sway someone in his favor.
In short, while he seems professional, deep down John is a controlling, manipulative man who puppeteers his followers. This is simply because he desires to see just how far he can push them... or how far they're willing to go for him.
Powers:
Johnathan is best at manipulating others through words. His stoic demeanor and professional background make it easy for him to make even the most malevolent orders sound reasonable and fair. He excels in picking apart words or emotions from hostile parties and using them against them.
Behavior Analysis
Years of experience as a psychotherapist has granted Johnathan the ability to read and analyze people's psyches with startling accuracy. He's best at predicting group behavior and crafting plans in accordance with his predictions. John can also glean baseline personality archetypes from individuals, but he can't entirely predict how they react from first impressions alone. It benefits him more to study or speak with individuals to better learn how to predict or manipulate them. The longer he observes someone, the more he learns, giving him ample time to adjust his plans and outcomes accordingly.
Loyal Patients
Johnathan's job has endeared himself to many of his patients - most to the point of fanatic loyalty. Those who feel a deep sense of debt or gratitude to the doctor almost seem to look to him in reverence. All it takes is one word, one order, and these patients would be more than willing to die for him. They are numerous and often hide in plain sight, but many are generally dim or weak willed individuals who were easily swayed by Johnathan's words. They refuse any slander against Johnathan.
Weaknesses:
Much of John's influence and control over others depends entirely on each person. His methods tend to not work on those with strong wills or personalities, so he usually
History:
Born in Ireland, Johnathan was the eldest son of a tax accountant. His family was rather well off, living better than most. He usually kept to himself in his youth, observing his peers with impunity as John was usually regarded as the quiet one. Of course, the lack of constant social interaction distorted his perception of others, allowing him to view people... differently. Having developed so little empathy, John found he was able to view people from a purely logical perspective. This fascination continued into his later years, where he would gain a degree in psychology. With it, he would become a psychotherapist; not out of altruism, but purely for his own study and financial profit.
John quickly grew successful in his field. His renown eventually earned him a job opportunity in America, prompting him to move out of his home country. There, he was tasked with handling a particularly disturbed felon that criminal psychologists had trouble with. Though it took some time, Johnathan was successful in rehabilitating the man. Lauded for his accomplishment, John saw a new opportunity to expand his work and began to take criminal clients. One of these would end up being Sean MacGowan, who would go on to swear lifelong loyalty to John...
Even with this early success, Johnathan quickly grew bored. He'd come to realize recurring patterns in his clients, and his job of "healing" or "fixing" them had become nothing more than a tireless drive with no end in sight. Combined with his lack of empathy, Johnathan simply concluded that humans were no better than animals that needed to be guided... no, tamed.
Johnathan wanted a change of pace. He'd married a colleague, Elizabeth Warden, solely because he believed she'd make a good wife. It didn't alleviate his boredom. The closest mental stimulation he'd experienced was when he worked with rehabilitating criminals. They were variables in the norm, after all; that's why he was hired to "fix" them. Society wouldn't accept them otherwise, leading John to ponder about experimentation in morality...
Intrigued, Johnathan used his occupation to subtly influence his clients, beginning with the smallest of misconducts. He would continue this experiment over a span of at least 20 years, gradually increasing the intensity of the crimes he influenced them to commit. What began as a curious little exercise slowly grew into a wide network of pawns for Johnathan to play with. Most would simply know him as a somewhat famous psychotherapist, unaware he's amassed a loyal following always at his beck and call...
To this day, Johnathan continues his work with little to no suspicion in Aster City, though he's currently found some amusement in tormenting a certain young teenager...
Anything else:
- Many of his patients simply refer to him as "the doctor."
