Relationship: Echo seems distant from the rest of his family, though this is probably because of years of being separated from them. He might have a bit of resentment towards his father Cardinal, but it's due to circumstances out of Cardinal's control. Echo ultimately cares for him and his older brother Crow. He dislikes his grandfather Strix and is disdainful towards his eldest brother Raven.
Personality:
Echo is a reserved young man. Calm and collected under most circumstances, he seems only concerned with the pursuit of knowledge. He's mostly lost in thought about his magic or research, as he's always thinking of ways to use his knowledge to benefit or prepare himself, though this makes him seem distant and uninterested in others. His aloofness gives him an air of maturity to the point where he seems a bit intimidating. Part of this was because he was forced to raise himself; he's simply used to getting things done on his own, though he won't refuse help if it'll make his life easier.
Still, Echo can be a bit stubborn; if he finds a piece of information missing or unsolved, he'll tend to fixate on it until he's figured it out or if he's exhausted all of his options. This fixation can grow to the point where he'll neglect his health and must rely on a close friend to keep him grounded.
Powers:
Innate Magical Bloodline of the Ancient Crow
From his father Cardinal's side, Echo inherited a magical bloodline believed to be descended from an ancient, magical crow. Said crow was the familiar of a powerful sorcerer. When the sorcerer was killed, the crow took over his work and used his magic to become human. All of his descendants must bear the name of a bird to utilize the bloodline's innate magic. While Echo may not be a bird name, it's only a nickname; His true name is in fact a bird's name, allowing him to use his bloodline's magic.
Magic sensing
Unlike his brother Crow, who can always sense magic, Echo has to actively focus in order to detect magic. He has to concentrate harder still to identify what specifically it is, though his knowledge covers most forms of curses, hexes and magical traps, as well as supernatural effects or entities. He can try to sense magic from a general direction as well and attempt to track the source.
Utility Magic
Echo taught himself a variety of small spells mostly used for getting around or exploring dangerous areas. Examples of this are levitation or short range teleports. He can also cast a jump spell to help others leap higher, though he must touch them for it to work. He also possesses a long range teleport spell, but it comes with a long cool down and is mostly his means of escaping an area in case of emergencies or when his task is done. Since he was never formally trained in magic, his spells are sort of haphazardly put together. They usually get the job done, but they're not always reliable.
Dark Magic
Echo was never properly trained in this magic, but as a Blackmoore, it's his family's innate speciality. He's mostly pieced several spells together by himself, though they primarily focus on deception rather than hurting others.
Disguise - He can't make disguises from thin air, but he can use magic to enhance existing ones.
False Image - He can create an illusionary image to hide himself and others. If he's not focusing or leaves the area, the illusion will be a static image that will disappear once he's far enough away. If he's focusing, he can animate the image to his will. The image can be walked through.
Scrying - Echo can pick a magical point, though it has to be a place that Echo is familiar with or has a line of sight to. From this magical point, he can look around 10 feet in each direction, but any further will be obscured by darkness regardless of the lighting situation.
Magical Clone - Echo can create an intangible clone that can move around in his stead. Echo can then use the clone's senses to hear and see things through its perspective, but the real Echo himself will be blind and deaf while doing so. He can only use his own senses or the clone's; not both at the same time. This is the strongest of Echo's dark magic spells and often leaves him mentally fatigued afterwards, making scrying his preferred option.
Lightning Magic Gloves
Echo wears a pair of gloves that he says helps channel his lightning magic. Initially, it was a facade; he couldn't use lightning magic originally and instead relied on technology in his gloves to emit electricity instead. Over time though, he's begun to properly learn electricity spells and has since begun using his gloves to help enhance what little lightning magic he can do. It's mostly used for self defense, though it's also a useful means of powering objects.
Weaknesses:
While highly skilled at traversing ruins and disarming traps and the like, Echo's still only human and thus vulnerable to most means of lethal attacks. He has plenty of magic for deception, but none for physical defense. His magic also relies on mental fortitude and energy, so he can reach a point where he'll be too fatigued to cast any spells.
History:
The youngest of three siblings, Echo's mother Rose disappeared on an expedition when he was 7 years old. Three years later, his older brother Crow suddenly fell into a coma, while his eldest brother Raven disappeared without warning. Echo's father Cardinal was then deemed unfit to care for his children, and so Echo was placed with his grandfather Strix. Echo barely interacted with him and mostly took care of himself, shutting himself in his room. There, he secretly studied a valued tome that he'd swiped from his father's library before Echo was moved from his home.
After graduating high school and moving in with a friend, Echo was fooled into believing that a childhood friend knew the reasoning behind his brother's coma. This turned out to not be the case, but he'd learned an important fact during the ordeal: Crow's coma was magically induced. Determined to find the root cause and maybe undo it, Echo picked up the intensity of his studies. During this time, it seemed his tome attracted strange happenings that increased in frequency and danger, though they one day stopped as quickly as they began...
Echo later traveled to a chain of islands in hopes of uncovering the secrets of an ancient sorcerer, believing they could help reverse his brother's coma. During a crisis on the islands, Echo momentarily awakened the true powers of his bloodline and nearly succumbed to the dark energies of the ancient sorcerer. He resisted the call of darkness, but his involvement painted him as a villain. He found this out because of his eldest brother, Raven, who had shown up with an organization to hunt Echo down. Raven held a grudge against him for reasons Echo didn't know, but he had little time to react. Echo's friends allowed themselves to be captured as a distraction for him to escape. He regrouped with several other allies and eventually returned to stop the island's true threat: the organization Raven had joined.
With the organization felled, the group was sent to jail - with Raven among them. Echo himself was excused and continued his search elsewhere. While he tirelessly explored and researched all sorts of magic spells and artifacts, it would be four more years until Crow awoke from his coma on his own. Echo had no idea until after his brother had gone through an entirely different ordeal upon awakening. Though relieved to hear he was safe and sound, Echo found himself unsure of what to do with himself. He'd spent his time exploring ruins, studying magic and acquiring relics - all for the sake of trying to help his brother. Still, he'd found some degree of enjoyment of it... so he might as well pursue it.
This led him to settling down in Aster City - specifically to join the Adventurer Guild. Echo wasn't particularly interested in making new friends, but after his closest comrades went their separate ways, he figured it would be best to lend his skills to others. In return, he'd at least find some safety in numbers...
Anything else:
- Echo claims his real name is Keaton, but it's just another cover up for his true name: Parakeet.
- Echo was the nickname his mother called him as a child, playing on the bird called the Echo Parakeet.
