Name: Vares Wynn
Gender: Male
Age: ~45+
Race: Faunian (Albino Crow)
Home: Aster City
Alliance: Gaia Labs (Founder)
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Likes: Tea, birds, knives, money
Dislikes: Disorder
Relationship: He tries to be professional with others. He's drifted away from his friend, Jun Amano, but has promised not to see harm done to him so long as Jun keeps his side of the bargain.
Personality:
A calm, collected and composed individual, Vares only seems to be concerned with the smooth running of his operations. Unless it threatens his company's research or funding, he apparently cares little for anything else. Vares often maintains a professional demeanor, though his appearance and subtle mannerisms seems to exude an intimidating aura. This appears to convince most working under him to follow his orders with little question. When doing business with others, he seems to relax a bit, appearing courteous and offering potential clients food and drink. Though he possesses the power to do more in life, he seems content with managing Gaia Labs.
Powers:
White Winged Flight
As a Faunian, Vares possesses a large pair of white crow wings on his back. He can use them to fly around if need be, but he dislikes how the wind makes him look unkempt and prefers to stay grounded. Since he doesn't rely much on flight, he can be a bit unsteady on the rare occasions he does take to the sky. His wings also tire easily because he doesn't exercise them much.
Innate Magical Bloodline of the Ancient Crow
Vares is a member of the magical bird bloodline mentioned in Cardinal Blackmoore's profile. Because his name is the Estonian word for crow, Vares meets the requirement to utilize the ancient magic. He'd been formally trained to use his abilities for utility and combat, but his aversion to fighting has left his skills rusty. It seems he's continued to keep using magic solely for basic utility, like grabbing objects or teleporting in a dire situation, but he can still call upon magic if forced to fight.
If using magic for combat, he seems to favor magical energy projectiles that maintain solid, sharp forms. He enjoys unleashing them in bursts of rapid fire amounts. For all intents and purposes, they function similarly to knives and thus can be blocked with shields or solid surfaces like them. They cannot be picked up however and tend to disintegrate afterwards. He must actively use his magic to maintain its solidity if he desires to do something like keep an object pinned to the wall.
Cross Knife
Vares keeps a cross on his person, which conceals a knife. As he dislikes fighting, it rarely sees use, but he's surprisingly dexterous with it. If faced with a melee weapon, he's more than capable of defending himself with the knife, though it'd be difficult for him to get a good strike in himself.
Weaknesses:
Though he can defend himself, Vares' combat ability is rusty. He relies on others to stop threats long before they can get to him. He would rather flee or hide himself away than deal with others who could bring him harm. Conventional weapons are as fatal to him as any other human. If cornered, he can always use his magic, but there's no telling what could happen to either party if he tries to utilize it to its fullest.
History:
One of the founders of Gaia Labs, Vares sought to invest in the future of superheroing. He believed there would be a demand for metahumans, so he poured his funds into the facility that would delve into research on the subject. The group's first batch of metahumans were created from volunteers, though the project had limited success. Even though powers were granted to each of the individuals, many suffered from several health problems and side effects. The group was deemed too unstable to act as fighters and defenders for the city, so they were released, though Gaia Labs closely monitored their health and assisted them when necessary.
Years later, disaster struck when a handful of these released subjects began to wreak havoc on the city. Vares knew the future of his facility would be doomed if the public found out they were Gaia Lab's creations, so he went out and personally took care of them himself. At the same time, he ordered all personnel to round up the other test subjects, using lethal force if necessary. At the end of the crisis, several of the subjects had died, a few had been taken in, but only one survived in the end: Malik Meija.
Vares would've had him killed then and there in order to preserve Gaia Labs' secret, but seeing that Malik had fought the hardest and was the sole survivor, Vares had another idea: he would allow the man to live under the condition that he would live in the facility and obey its orders. After all, Gaia Labs' medical assistance was also the sole reason Malik could continue living. Malik himself refused, protesting that Gaia actually took away his sole reason for living, having killed his wife and daughter in the attack. Of course, when it was revealed his daughter was still alive, Malik reluctantly agreed to Vares' terms.
Over time, as Gaia Labs managed to improve the quality of their creation of metahumans, the crime rate in the city seemed to lower with it. Vares' vision proved to be a success, but... without any crime to stop, he realized Gaia Labs wouldn't be sustainable. So, he came to one conclusion: Gaia Labs had to manufacture their own criminals. Gaia Labs' co-founder, Jun, was disgusted with the idea, but since Vares held the company's reins and all of its power, Jun could do nothing to dissuade him. In the end, Jun stepped down from the company, taking a vow of silence in exchange for Vares guaranteeing his safety.
Many years have since passed and Gaia Labs has retained its prominence. Renowned for creating and managing heroes under its Gaia Force division, Gaia Labs is viewed with nothing but positivity. Sure, sometimes a question of ethics comes up, but Vares assures the public that all of their metahumans are volunteers only. Vares has done everything in his power to cultivate his company's image, but little do people know about the dark secrets lurking beneath the surface...
