(Hopefully will replace with own art later)
Name: Solan Noxborne
Alias: Nightshade; Prince Solan Noxborne
Gender: Male
Age: 20
Race: Human (Duskfallean/Lightvalean mix; ears are slightly pointed)
Date of birth: Unknown
Quote: "I just so happen to work best in the dark. Would you like a demonstration~?"
Home: Aster City; The Auroran Union
Alliance: Kirin Canyon; Auroran Union (Chaotic Neutral)
Family: Helian Valehart (brother), Belladonna Noxborne (mother), Soleil Valehart (father)
Friends: ?
Rivals: ?
Enemies: Those who endanger Helian or the Auroran Union
Likes: Scheming pranks, puzzle games, flirting, ghost/cryptid stories, amusement parks
Dislikes: Taking the lead, clowns, lizards, nature, sappy movies
Relationship: The younger of the two princes of the Auroran Union, he respects his parents but tends to skirt the line of being sassy towards them. He engages in a little more sarcasm with his mother than his father (due to having a closer relationship) while he tends to ease up on his antics around his father. He used to harbor feelings of disdain towards Helian, but that's since changed after a certain incident. He's much closer to his older brother now, often looking out for him, ready to fiercely retaliate against any foe unfortunate enough to try and bring him harm.
Personality:
A highly intelligent, lithe young man, Solan's very competitive and will push himself if he's determined to outdo someone else. This will be at any means necessary, such as sabotaging his opponent, making him incredibly fearsome in a long term feud. However, he has high standards for who he considers worth his time, so he rarely engages in underhanded acts of malice as frequently as he did in the past. This unfortunately means he's also not as motivated as he could be, often preferring to take short cuts and rest on his laurels. That isn't to say he dislikes applying himself; Solan is incredibly capable, but simply desires to save his energy and brainpower for greater endeavors. (He will put comical amounts of effort into puzzle games, though.)
Being a master of guile, his appearance of laziness is also a ploy meant to lure others into a false sense of security. Acutely aware of what's going on around him, this allows him to determine where others' true loyalties lie, which was a habit influenced by the potential threats on his life as a royal prince. Solan's also a bit nosy, poking around where he shouldn't belong if he's seeking out information on someone he thinks is worth his while. This is because he likes to be one step ahead and have various contingency plans in case of emergency, allowing him to keep his cool in almost any situation. That said, he absolutely hates being caught off guard, and doing so may reignite his "anything goes" methods once more.
He enjoys teasing others as an idle past time. This is especially true for girls, having made it his signature character trait under his actor alias of Nightshade.
Powers:
Agility & Charm:
Solan is naturally limber and agile, especially after years of training his movement in battle. While quick and adept at gracefully moving around attacks, he's not very strong or durable, which lead to his hit and run style of fighting. He's also inherited his mother's charm, allowing him to be rather persuasive and talk his way out of a fight or fool others while undercover. He also tends to use his charms to flirt.
Dark Magic:
Solan was trained by the best mages of Duskfall, learning the ways of arcane rituals to utilize the forces of darkness and shadow. While naturally apt and quick to pick up on spells, he does not use them to directly fight. Instead, he uses dark magic in the form of hexes and curses meant to enhance himself or diminish the capability of his foes. If forced to fight with direct spells however, his attack magic is clearly potent but not as refined as they could be for someone of his skill level, due to no longer having the motivation to train. This means his magic sometimes causes collateral damage or unintended side effects to his target, the area or even himself.
Because he excels in curses and spells, Solan is also an expert at identifying ones casted by others. He can easily reverse his own while others' might take a bit more time, but he can usually expel them much more quickly than his brother Helian can.
Shining Arts:
Solan was trained by the commander of the Lightvalean royal guard to utilize the celestial light. As a prince of Lightvale, his training was much more extensive than the average knight's. Because of this, his training has taught him enough for him to creatively bend the rules and normal usage of Shining Arts, especially when used in conjunction with dark magic. While he can use it for basic healing and shielding like most others, Solan mostly utilizes it as a means of funneling curses and hexes. One example includes hexing his Shining Arts light shield and placing it around a foe to inflict an effect on them, such as sleepiness. While he can use both Shining Arts and dark magic together (unlike his older brother who can only have one active at a time), this is because he uses them passively, like the aforementioned cursed shield. However, using them in conjunction with each other also means the strength of both abilities is weaker than they should be, so it would be easier to break away from the shield or shake off the curse. Thankfully, low usage of Shining Arts and weak dark magic spells helps Solan stave off mental fatigue better than most practicers, but it's still possible to gain it from overuse.
Most light in Shining Arts usually appears as a golden yellow or yellowish white. Interestingly, the color of Solan's Shining Arts shimmers in a variety of colors, ranging from various shades of soft pink, light blue and lavender. Combined, they're all similar to the early signs of a sunset, reflecting Solan's preference for darkness.
Weapon: Phantom Fang
He was granted a Dull Grip in his youth, which is a specially forged hilt only granted to Lightvalean knights. Once the user begins to train with Shining Arts, they are expected to use their celestial light to form a weapon out of the the Dull Grip. While Solan's initial weapon was a standard blade common to all beginners, over time it grew smaller and eventually took the form of a dagger, fitting with his tendency to approach his fights with pragmatic methods. As he gained more experience, the dagger manifested several crystals that make use of Solan's dark magic abilities.
Naming the weapon "Phantom Fang," it best works with Solan's hit and run tactics when utilized as a melee weapon. It is optimal for sneak attacks and striking key points on a foe's body. These strikes are meant to temporarily disable a foe from attacking, such as striking their wrist to prevent them from swinging a sword. While the effect can be brief, it gives Solan a chance to move and plan his next action while his opponent is distracted.
Thanks to the magic storing crystals, the Phantom Fang is also excellent for channeling magical effects. If he chooses to, Solan can prepare a curse or spell in advance and store up to two of them total. Each magical spell would be placed in each of the side crystals, which will faintly glow when imbued with magic. The makeup of these crystals allows the magic to grow more powerful as time goes on until it is released, but it can eventually fizzle out or automatically discharge without warning if Solan doesn't do it himself. And even if he doesn't, his unrefined magic could still potentially have a strange side effect - again, either to his opponent, the area or himself.
He cannot use this when he has magic stored in Phantom Fang - the glow of the spell charged crystals prevent him from hiding in complete darkness.
Void Trick: Solan uses his dark magic to open up a small portal the size of his open hand. He can keep it small enough that the portal is unnoticeable. This is usually used for his Phantom Fang strikes; he'll attack one area, but have his dagger go through the portal and open up a second one elsewhere where the strike will hit. When attacking, this portal trick is limited to the area immediately in front of him; about one foot away maximum. This is because of some strange limitation between the Phantom Fang and its interaction with the portals. Otherwise, if Solan is performing or using the ability for leisure (such as grabbing an object from a table), it can go up from 5 to 15 feet or even a bit further if his target is within his line of vision.
A hand sized portal is the largest Solan can create. If he trained this technique, he could theoretically create larger portals to travel longer distances, but he's simply unmotivated to do so.
Mind's Eye:
Solan summons a shadowy orb (vaguely resembling an eye) which he can use to spy or scout an area. It is very quick but very fragile. It is spectral in nature and thus difficult to see with the naked eye (even more so in darkness), but it's not completely invisible and can be detected by technological or magical means. This orb can also go as far as Solan wants with no limits, but he can only create and use one at a time. If it is destroyed or dispelled, he'd have to create a new one from his current location and guide it all the way back to where the last one fell if he wishes to continue observing that location.
History:
Solan is the second born prince to King Soleil and Queen Belladonna. Raised alongside his older brother Helian, the two got along fairly well in their childhood. However, during adolescence, the pair were made acutely aware of their royal status, with Helian growing distant to focus entirely on his future responsibilities as heir to the throne. This caused Solan to view his older brother as an arrogant show off who faked his kindness and goodness in a shallow attempt to prove himself worthy. Solan thus developed a bitterness towards his older brother, growing cold and hostile internally, but maintaining the bare minimum decorum of a civil facade. After all, if Helian was going to pretend to be something he wasn't, then two could play at that game.
Desiring to show up his brother, Solan excessively trained his skills in the areas where Helian's were weakest. He focused on his dark magic in particular, knowing full well he couldn't match Helian in strength or direct combat. His contempt fueled his magic well enough that it grew especially potent to the point where Solan's skill in dark magic matched Helian's skill in Shining Arts. But that wasn't enough - believing Helian needed to be knocked down a peg, Solan pulled whatever tricks he could to make his brother look like a fool. He always got away scott free.
That all changed when Helian finally caught him in the middle of one of his schemes, plotting to trap him in a holding cell. After a scuffle between the two, a series of mishaps revealed a trap door, dumping the brothers into an old series of abandoned chambers beneath the castle. Helian had actually broken Solan's fall, irritating the younger brother. Part of it was how pathetically far he thought Helian would go to maintain his facade, while part of it... was an inkling of guilt after all Solan had done to him. However, he refused to succumb to his fake persona, ignoring his brother as the two spent a day trying to seek their way out. It was only after Helian's attempts at keeping things light hearted that Solan finally snapped, directly confronting his brother with his feelings or hatred and contempt.
What Solan hadn't expected was for Helian to agree that his feelings were completely justified. He confirmed Solan's suspicions about putting on a facade, but not to show off - rather, it was to push aside his insecurities and force himself to be someone worth ruling. He then admitted Solan was probably better to rule, having sharpened his skills outside of combat, like his diplomacy and skill in politics. But what was most astonishing was his reasoning for breaking Solan's fall: it was not entirely out of the goodness of his heart, he confessed, but for the potential of dying a noble suicide.
Shaken by the grave scope of his brother's mental stress, Solan said nothing other than that he needed time to absorb what he was told. The two then focused on escaping the underground chambers but eventually stopped for the night. While Helian slumbered, Solan stayed up, processing his brother's perspective. All this time, he thought Helian had allowed the kingship to go to his head, but it was quite the opposite. Realizing all he had done was make things worse for him, Solan mulled over his guilt and actions, eventually resolving to make up for what he did. When Helian awoke the next morning, Solan reaffirmed this, apologizing for his malice and vowing to to help shoulder whatever burden awaited them in the future. With this mental weight lifted, the two reconciled and managed to find their way out.
Since then, Solan relaxed considerably. However, because his motivation to sharpen his skills was directly related to his disdain for Helian, Solan no longer possessed the drive to prove himself better, resulting in his abilities plateauing. He did continue to improve his cunning and guile however, finding joy in continuing to pull harmless pranks on others and developing elaborate schemes around them. Now gaining the reputation as a slacker who wouldn't take anything seriously, Solan has actually taken advantage of this, using it against others who underestimate him. He's also devoted much of his time secretly assisting Helian behind the scenes, which contributes to him apparently spending the rest of his time lazing around. This also came with the side effect of making Helian look better, which might've been part of Solan's plan all along...
Despite this, Helian eventually began to succumb to mental fatigue again as he grew older and the pressure grew heavier. Solan quickly noticed this and found that even their brief getaways no longer helped lighten Helian's stress. Deciding that they should truly venture out and away from their home, Solan approached their parents explaining that he and Helian needed more worldly experience. He declared that the two would leave on a journey, immediately leaving before the King and Queen could even get a word in. Solan then goaded Helian into escaping the castle grounds with him and into the woods. The latter was shocked to find out Solan's plan to run away on adventure, hesitating at the thought of abandoning their home. However, Solan reassured him this would benefit in the long run, because how could a future king take care of his people when he still needed to take care of himself?
Though reluctant, Helian hadn't much choice but to go along with the plan, trusting his brother that things would work out for the best. Discovering a hidden, magical portal, Solan analyzed it and concluded that it was the same portal that the Moonbay Clan of Duskfall used to leave the realm. Helian was apprehensive all the same, but with the guards approaching, the two quickly made their split second decision and plunged through the portal.
Arriving in the forest outside of Aster City, the brothers discovered a strange new place offering boundless new opportunities for them. Though they had to work their way from the ground up, Solan didn't mind - he had enough persuasion skills to land a job as an entertainer at Kirin Canyon. Over the course of a year, he had taken up a lead role in a TV show as a bad boy heartthrob, Nightshade. There's also rumors of Nightshade moonlighting as a crime fighter, usually appearing not too far from another hero called Morning Glory...

- His name comes from Solanaceae, the scientific family name for Nightshade. It was chosen by his parents to represent the flowering/plant naming theme of Duskfall's ruling family, and the symbolic fact that "Sol" is the Latin word for sun, which is also present in his father's name, Soleil.

Shadowstep:
A special, ancient technique, it is the signature ability and namesake of an espionage group that has served the Noxborne family for generations. Though it requires intense focus and acute awareness, it allows the user to completely meld into the shadows, erasing their presence entirely. This is mostly used for sneaking by foes, ambush attacks or intelligence gathering. The major drawback is that the user must be in darkness or shadow to conceal themselves. The slightest bit of light will reveal their presence. Learning this was not part of Solan's formal training; rather, he sought out a Shadowstep agent and requested to be taught.
Weaknesses:
As mentioned previously, both dark magic and Shining Arts take a mental toll on their users. Dark magic also has a chance to corrupt its user if the use of the magic is fueled by negative emotions such as jealousy or hatred. Solan also doesn't do well in direct combat due to not being physically strong or durable, preferring to use indirect methods to whittle a foe down. He also likes to studying his opponent before hand or at least have some information on them, and while he can still adapt to being caught off guard, he still hates it due to being an extra step he needs to work around when utilizing his strategies.
