He's friends with Tier, a young mage, and Kross, a ranger. He struggles with harsh judgment from the older members of the Hollowed Oak and is later guided by Sorcha, his druid circle's guardian.
Personality:
At first glance, Farren is a young man who seems level headed, rational and mature. He carries himself with a respectful degree of formality and diplomacy. While he seems like a natural leader, in truth, he has crippling self esteem issues. He is a hard worker and more than willing to put in effort to be the best he can be, but because he cares so deeply about what others think of him, he's come to believe that he is never good enough. He is very hard on himself and is constantly stressed from always striving to be better. He does not take failure very well and often struggles with the idea of whether or not he deserves his place in the world. He feels forced to hide his insecurities for fear of appearing weak, and only opens up to those he considers close friends.
Powers:
As the Archdruid of the Hollowed Oak, Farren has a versatile pool of magic that draws upon the power of nature. He is capable of using varying abilities that support, heal, or do damage.
Nature Magic - Plant Control
Farren's ability to call upon plant life for assistance. They mostly take the form of vines which sprout up from the ground, which means it's difficult to use in areas where plant life can't thrive. He can use roots to trip or ensnare foes or vines to lash out or bind an enemy.
He can also summon thick bramble vines to do extra damage, but they can also be used to form a protective wall or barrier. They vanish if Farren moves out of range, though he can enchant them to last a little longer or constantly renew them to keep them up. He can summon these particular vines in difficult environments, though it uses up more magic and can cause collateral damage.
Plant and Animal Empathy
Farren can understand the "feelings" or condition of plans or animals to some degree. For plants, he can only assess them from their current state and use this to understand a particular location - such as natural weather in the immediate area or a recent event that might have happened.
For animals, Farren cannot technically speak to them, but he can understand their feelings. He has an easier time understanding the feelings of wild creatures. He has difficulty communicating with certain domestic animals like pets due to them sounding more "human" to him. He can also use this ability to ask animals to do small tasks for him, though this depends on the animal's temperament and task complexity. Simple, fitting tasks would be asking a squirrel to retrieve a small item nearby, or requesting a wolf to distract a foe.
Healing Magic
Farren's healing magic that draws upon nature. It normally takes the form of an ethereal flower bud called a Lifebud. It will plant itself in a target and slowly heals them over time. Farren can also charge up the Lifebud, which will release multiple spiritual dandelion-like seeds that will scatter among Farren's allies, allowing him to heal multiple people at once. However, if Farren is attacked while conjuring a Lifebud, it will die and force him to start over with a new one.
Farren can also use a magical form of aromatherapy, which reduces or clears ailments like toxins or burns. It can also help re-energize the body from fatigue, or ease stress, fear or nausea. Farren can also physically mix a concoction of herbs and plants to achieve the same effect, trading the use of magic for the time it takes to make it.
Farren can also use a form of life sharing, which operates by splitting his current health with a target. This is an emergency spell for dire situations where there's no time to cast or Farren is too fatigued to use magic. Life sharing goes both ways; Farren can use it to stabilize his own health, or share his own health to stabilize an ally.
Animal Shapeshifting - Wolf Form
Farren channels his power to transform himself into a large, thick maned wolf. In this form, he is swift and powerful, heavily relying on physical attacks. This is also because he cannot use spells without making this form unstable; he needs to focus all of his magical power into maintaining his wolf form. He can, however, use the magical energy to grant certain properties to his wolf attacks, like enhancing his claws’ range or leeching a target’s life energy when he bites them. These attacks are just simpler, magically weaker versions of the magic listed above.
He’s still learning how to incorporate his other spells, but generally he relies on his agility and brute strength as a wolf. He also uses it as a form of quick travel and can carry a passenger or two on his back. He’s immune to others attempting to magically transform him into other creatures due to using his own magic to hold this shape; he can, however, still be magically forced back into his human form. He can still be altered by other forms of magic as well, such as shrinking or changing color. Finally, Farren’s abilities as a wolf are much more enhanced if he’s in an environment dominated by nature.
If desperate, he can channel all of his magical energy into a powerful spell enhanced by his wolf form, at the cost of shifting him back into his humanoid form immediately after the attack. He’ll need a bit of time to recover before he can shift back again.
Weaknesses:
Fire, slicing attacks, metal weaponry or modern weaponry serve as good counters against Farren's abilities. His nature magic is also far less effective in urban or dead environments.
Farren also cannot overuse his magic as he risks harming the nature that he draws his power from. (The exception to this is his wolf form, since he’s only holding a shape with his magic as opposed to constantly using it.) Pushing himself continuously will also take a physical and mental toll on him, which he already does well enough without his magic.
History:
Farren was raised deep in the woods that lie on the outskirts of Aster City. He grew up immersed in nature, constantly exploring the area around his home and growing fond of the animals gathered about. Farren’s mother often raised him alone; for some reason, his father, Faolan, seemed to be away for days at time. Farren didn’t mind, though - his father would always return to spend time with him and his mother, and Farren was always ecstatic for his visits. He was 5 years old when his father one day arrived home in the form of a large, grand wolf.
As it turned out, his father Faolan confessed he had been secretly training with nature magic, and he had come home to show his family his new mastery. He would use this new power to patrol the forest each day as a wolf, allowing his visits home to become more frequent. Faolan also donned a bright scarf around his neck so that Farren could easily distinguish him from any other wild wolves.
All was was well until Farren reached the age of 11. He greeted his father, who would always return over the same exact hill in his wolf form... only for Farren to be attacked by it! Luckily, his father wasn’t too far behind, managing to drive off the foreign beast and save his son. Farren escaped the ordeal with a few scrapes and bruises, but his father had suffered a fatal strike. Faolan’s wife did her best to tend to his wounds, but it was no good. Farren was also reprimanded for approaching a wild wolf, but even as he cried, he swore it was wearing a scarf like his father’s...
Faolan decided his only chance at survival was seeking out the ones who trained him: a secretive group of druids collectively called the Hollowed Oak. He had been sworn to secrecy however and desired to see them alone, but his family knew he needed their help. When they arrived, the druids were initially reluctant to allow them in, but cautiously accepted them when they saw Faolan’s wounds. Unfortunately, they found that his wounds were strangely unnatural and unaffected by their magic; all they could do was ease Faolan’s pain. Farren and his mother stayed at his side the whole time.
Before he passed, Faolan struggled to speak his dying words. When his voice failed him, he instead emitted a soft magical aura, transmitting his feelings of love for his wife and son. Once the feeling of warmth washed over Farren, he could only watch as his father’s body faded into an ethereal state before dissipating into a magical energy that returned to the earth. Although Faolan’s passing was peaceful and painless, Farren believed he had caused his father’s death. If he hadn’t approached that wild wolf, then he wouldn’t have ever been in trouble, and his father would never have had to save him...
After the Hollowed Oak gave their sympathies, they asked Farren and is mother to leave. Farren agreed - not to just leave their sanctuary, but to leave the forest all together. Farren’s mother loved nature as much as her husband did, but for the sake of her son and his trauma, accepted his request. The two left their secluded home and eventually moved into none other than Aster City. (And, unbeknownst to them, the druids quietly wiped their memory of their hidden grove’s existence...)
Farren spent his teen years trying to adapt to the city, hoping to block out the guilt he felt about getting his father killed. Having been raised in seclusion, he didn’t feel comfortable interacting with the other kids, so he was often quiet and kept to himself. Thankfully, the city’s rich culture of magic, science and superpowers was more than enough to keep Farren occupied. He gained a budding interest for magic in particular. He tried to deny himself from looking into it, but he eventually gave in and began to study healing type magic on his own time. With it, he found that his first successful use of a healing spell... rejuvenated a withered plant back to full, blooming health.
Taking it as a sign, Farren slowly reached out to his former affinity with nature. He devoted more time to environmental programs in school, which eventually lead to him finding his own small organization after graduating. This would become known as NEPA: Nature’s Enchantment Protection Agency. Combined with his further study on life and plant based magic, along with dabbling in some botany, Farren grew more comfortable and open to his peers.
By age 21, Farren had carved his own path filled with his own accomplishments. His confidence and success lead him to finally returning to his old home in the forest to make peace with himself after his father’s death 10 years ago. While reflecting, he took the time to observe how much nature had reclaimed the area since he left. This inspired him to live in his old forest home, secluded and overgrown with vines, as he continue to reconnect with the forest.
One day when he was out gathering supplies, he came across the first person he had seen in a long time. He was injured, that much Farren could tell. He cautiously healed the young man and fortunately found that he was harmless. The young man introduced himself as Mikko. As thanks, he took Farren to his village. Farren became fast friends with Mikko and his village’s community.
Exploring the forest more, Farren later discovered the the grove of the Hollowed Oak, but he had no memory of ever being there. The elders tried to push him out, but one of them - their leader - recognized Farren’s self taught studies in life healing and nature magic. He thought it would be a shame to waste such potential, and so the druid leader decided to properly train Farren himself. Farren would end up seeing him as a father figure.
Farren’ training was close to complete when the druid leader suddenly revealed it was his time to pass. The news was startling and upsetting to Farren, who had only just mastered his wolf form. He wasn’t just ready to let go. The druid leader reassured Farren that he would be fine so long as he continued to read the heart of nature as he always had. He bestowed him leadership of the druids before passing away similarly to Faolan. This time, however, Farren managed to steel himself for his teacher’s passing. He was given a duty by this man, and he was determined to fulfill it for both his and his father’s sake.
Farren has been in charge of the Hollowed Oak for about a year, and most of the druids are still skeptical. He wasn’t properly inducted or trained from a young age, so who could trust his magic to be reliable? He spent the last decade of his life growing up in the city, who’s to say he has nature’s best interests at heart? And, as Farren eventually found out, his father was one of the leader druid’s closest friends; what if the leader was playing favoritism? Luckily, Farren hasn’t messed up... “Not yet,” they say. Despite this, Farren works twice as hard as he should in hopes of one day being socially accepted by Hollowed Oak.
He currently splits his time between living in the city and overseeing Nature’s Enchantment Protection Agency, and living in his old forest home to oversee the Hollowed Oak. If not working in the city, he can usually be found patrolling around the forests as a wolf. He's also been investigating the appearance of a strange magical beast that appeared in the druid's hidden grove after a chain of unfortunate events...
